strace of the sshd on the 8.0 box:

# strace -fp 20490
select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, NULL)        = 1 (in [3])
accept(3, {sin_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(48740),
sin_addr=inet_addr("193.77.112.21")}}, [16]) = 4

pipe([5, 6])                            = 0
fork()                                  = 20497
[pid 20490] --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) ---
[pid 20490] wait4(-1, 0x7ffff140, WNOHANG, NULL) = -1 ECHILD (No child processes)
[pid 20490] rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, {0x804cd20, [CHLD], SA_RESTORER|SA_RESTART,
0x2ac7ec88}, {0x804cd20, [CHLD], SA_RESTORER|SA_RESTART, 0x2ac7ec88}, 8) = 0
[pid 20490] sigreturn()                 = ? (mask now [])
[pid 20490] close(6)                    = 0
[pid 20490] rt_sigaction(SIGALRM, {0x804ce80, [ALRM], SA_RESTORER|SA_RESTART,
0x2ac7ec88}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
[pid 20490] alarm(3600)                 = 0
[pid 20490] getpid()                    = 20490
[pid 20490] getpid()                    = 20490
[pid 20490] close(4)                    = 0
[pid 20490] select(6, [3 5], NULL, NULL, NULL <unfinished ...>

as can be seen, the child process immediately exits for unknown reason.

for the 8.0 box: it's one of the famous 440gx machines that refuse to run
properly with any 2.4 kernel (aic7xxx irq routing & co fun). in this case i was
forced to use latest kernel for the redhat 6.2 (2.2.19-6.2.16). could this have
to do something with this ssh issue?

Comment 1 Jure Pecar 2002-11-15 12:13:16 UTC
I downgraded openssh packages on the 8.0 box to those from 7.3 updates (3.1p1-6)
and ssh started to work as expected.

Comment 2 Tomas Mraz 2005-02-04 10:41:08 UTC
Neither 7.3 nor 8.0 are supported anymore.
