Description James 2012-01-19 12:27:28 UTC
Description of problem:
On the 3.2-series kernels (the earliest I've tested is kernel-3.2.0-2.fc16.x86_64 built from F17 sources), the IRQ timing workaround for hda-intel is being invoked again. This leads sometimes to choppy audio under load.

This ISN'T being invoked on kernel-3.1.6-1.fc16.x86_64, where I've not noticed any problems.

The machine has a Realtek ALC883 codec. Relevant stuff from dmesg (under 3.1.6):

[ 22.949918] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1226 SKU: Nid=0x1d sku_cfg=0x40158615
[ 22.949922] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1228 SKU: port_connectivity=0x1
[ 22.949924] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1229 SKU: enable_pcbeep=0x1
[ 22.949926] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1230 SKU: check_sum=0x00000005
[ 22.949929] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1231 SKU: customization=0x00000086
[ 22.949931] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1232 SKU: external_amp=0x2
[ 22.949933] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1233 SKU: platform_type=0x1
[ 22.949935] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1234 SKU: swap=0x0
[ 22.949938] ALSA sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c:1235 SKU: override=0x1

With 3.2, the additional appears:

[ 62.488790] hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.

We've added no patches to the 3.2 kernel in the ALSA area, so this is likely an upstream issue. Since you seem comfortable building your own kernels, would you mind reporting this to the upstream ALSA maintainers and working directly with them?

If you wind up opening a bug in https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/, please add it to the External Trackers section.

Comment 2 James 2012-01-19 13:17:47 UTC
Will do.

Comment 3 Josh Boyer 2012-04-30 21:09:48 UTC
Are you still seeing this issue with the 3.3 final kernel or with 3.4-rc4/5?

Comment 4 James 2012-05-02 19:21:30 UTC
Not currently seeing it with kernel-3.3.2-6.fc16.x86_64.

Comment 5 Josh Boyer 2012-05-02 19:50:52 UTC
Great, thanks. Please reopen if it pops back up.

Removing external tracker bug with the id '0005513' as it is not valid for this tracker
