Additional info: A similar bug was reported with similar behavior at Bug 752533. 10gen builds the binaries and packages with statically-linked js version 1.7, as can be seen here: https://github.com/mongodb/mongo/tree/master/src/third_party/js-1.7 This error does not occur on 10gen-supplied RPM packages for the same version.
