Description Bryce Verdier 2012-02-11 03:47:52 UTC
Description of problem:
When trying to boot into a 3.2 kernel, goes into initramfs, after about 30 seconds goes into dracut prompt saying it can't find the root block

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
all 3.2 kernels released do far

How reproducible:
100% with all recent kernels

Steps to Reproduce:
1.update kernel
2.
3.

Actual results:
dracut prompt with errors saying can't find block device.

Expected results:
kernel to boot

Additional info:
Here is my grub2 if that helps.

Comment 1 Josh Boyer 2012-02-11 14:15:11 UTC
Can you post a log from the boot with rd.info on the kernel command line?

Also, are the initramfs sizes for the 3.2 kernels comparable to the kernel that works?

Lastly, what kind of hardware do you have? "lspci -nn -vv" output and a dmesg from a working boot would be good.

Comment 2 Bryce Verdier 2012-02-11 21:57:40 UTC
Josh, thank you for getting back to me.

Your first question, I'm happy to do that, but are you wanting me to do that for the bad kernel, or the working one? If you want it to be for the bad one, how do you recommend I transfer the info if the kernel does not see my hard drives?

2) here is the end output from /boot:
  27 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4581776 Jan 13 08:42 vmlinuz-3.1.9-1.fc16.x86_64
   29 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4604752 Feb 3 12:23 vmlinuz-3.2.3-2.fc16.x86_64
   30 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4604656 Feb 8 17:29 vmlinuz-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64

They do seem to be comparable sizes.

3) lscpi -nn -vv gives me:

From the bad kernel boot. Can you bring the network interface up and cp the output off somewhere?

Also, a dmesg from a good kernel boot should be easy enough to attach.

> 2) here is the end output from /boot:
> 27 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4581776 Jan 13 08:42 vmlinuz-3.1.9-1.fc16.x86_64
> 29 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4604752 Feb 3 12:23 vmlinuz-3.2.3-2.fc16.x86_64
> 30 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4604656 Feb 8 17:29 vmlinuz-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64

That's the kernel. I asked about the initramfs. "ls -l /boot/initramfs*"

Lastly, what happens if you don't use the proprietary nVidia module?

Comment 4 Bryce Verdier 2012-02-14 03:42:25 UTC
DOH, sorry about the sending the wrong info:
13 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17603389 Jan 15 17:07 initramfs-3.1.9-1.fc16.x86_64.img
   12 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17301057 Feb 6 20:08 initramfs-3.2.3-2.fc16.x86_64.img
   14 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17291058 Feb 10 19:32 initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img
So they are pretty comparable to me here.

I will look into how to get a network connection from a dracut prompt, I'm not sure how successful I will be in this department.

I will also try reverting to the non-proprietary nvidia kernel module and will try to post the results shortly.

Comment 5 Bryce Verdier 2012-02-14 04:02:09 UTC
I have removed the nvidia driver and rebooted into the bad kernel. Nothing changed. Also, the rd.info command you wanted me to run shows up that the command is not in the path. I went looking in /bin and /sbin, but it was not in either of those 2 locations.

Here is my dmesg( running with nouveau ):

Here is the error I get on my screen.

It's not a command to run on a running system. You need to edit the kernel entry in the grub configuration file and pass 'rd.info' on the kernel command line.

If you can get the dmesg and/or dmesg+rd.info from the bad kernel boot, that will let us compare it to the good dmesg you have provided. Unfortunately, the image you attached doesn't really tell us anything we can go from.

pic of last part of dmesg

This is the closest way I can get a dmesg from the bad kernel (updated to 3.2.6 today, with no changes... one can hope ;) ). If there is documentation on how to start the nic in dracut I would be happy to do this over again.

PING

I'm just checking in. I'm going to guess that the second image I sent doesn't help much either.

Are there instructions on how I can get a network up in dacut? If there are I'd be happy to perform those commands and get a copy of the bad gmesg to you.

Tested with negative results. The same problem still occurs.

Was there a change in the build process or something?

Also, if there are instructions on how to setup networking from within dracut I'm happy get a copy of dmesg & such for further investigation.
Also, could my /etc/fstab help?

I wonder if the newer kernels mess with the UUID's? I'm wondering if I should change the UUID to /dev/md3 (in my case). Any other ideas?
