This is really crippling gnome-shell on F16 :-( Can someone please set severity and priority to urgent? Also, just to check if there's any common ground: what video driver are you guys using?
This is due to the latest NVIDIA proprietary driver. Downgrading to version 290.10 fixed this issue.

Hit system key. Start typing in an application name. Matching application list is NOT displayed and the shell switches back to the desktop view. I just upgraded to the Nvidia 295.40 binary drivers, and the problem went away.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 16.
