We have deployed a portal xyz through various xml files similar to how classic portal is deployed. As a result some link  such as register resolves to http://localhost:8080/portal/public/xyz/register which does not work. I wish reference guide had a section on these things.

Adding reference to register portlet in pages.xml and navigation.xml takes care of the problem. We are going to create a document for these things.
