Photo of my screens after trying to log in a second user

Description of problem:
When I try to switch user from KDE (without loging off the other), I can't login the second one. My screens split into squares of graphics.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kdm-4.8.3-3.fc17.i686
kde-baseapps-4.8.3-1.fc17.i686

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log into KDE with "user1".
2. Klick to KDE menu -> "switch user".
3. Select "new session".
4. Loginto KDE with "user2".

Actual results:
After logging in the second user, my screens split into several squares. And there's no way to see the desktop or anything to click.

Expected results:
Second user should be logged in parallel and it should be possible to use the second account.

Additional info:
The only way to escape from the hanging broken second session is to [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Backspace]. After that you'll be brought back to the login screen. If I switch back to the session of the first logged in user, I can continue working. But if I try to login with a different user again, it's the same.

What graphics driver/hardware? (This looks a lot like a driver bug.)

Comment 2 Marc Muehlfeld 2012-05-27 17:43:58 UTC
See here: http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_a4235c30-ebd1-41c8-92ed-f246320e33bf

It's a:
ZOTAC GeForce GT430 ZONE Edition (Nvidia GeForce FT430) on a GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 mainboard.

Driver is the one that was shipped with F17.

Comment 3 Kevin Kofler 2012-05-27 17:47:51 UTC
So that's the Nouveau driver.

I wonder if anybody can reproduce this with any other driver, otherwise we should probably reassign it to xorg-x11-drv-nouveau.

Comment 4 Marc Muehlfeld 2012-05-27 18:16:07 UTC
Just one more information:
Until about two weeks ago, I used F16 (also with the Nouveau driver) and don't had this issue.

Comment 5 Rex Dieter 2012-05-27 19:36:45 UTC
may be worth disabling desktop effects (for both users), and see if that helps any. (one easy way of accomplishing that is to login to kde (failsafe) session for each)

Comment 6 Kevin Kofler 2012-05-27 19:49:44 UTC
Yes, desktop effects were disabled by default in F16 and are now enabled by default in F17, so that may well be the difference.

If that's not it, it might be a regression in the driver. The version of kde-workspace is the same in current F16 updates and F17.

Comment 7 Marc Muehlfeld 2012-05-27 21:53:05 UTC
Disabling desktop effekts on both users, didn't help.

But if I log in with KDE failsave, I doesn't have this strange effect.

Comment 8 Rex Dieter 2012-05-29 01:22:29 UTC
failsafe working is ample evidence to suspect driver issue, reassigning.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-03 21:03:16 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-31 21:49:00 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
