Some more information would be useful. If you attempt to umount the mount manually, does that work OK? Does the same thing happen with other types of mount, such as NFS? What kernel version are you using?
I can umount the mount manually and that works fine. I don't have any other types of file systems to experiment with. I have tried kernel 3.3.7-1 and kernel 3.3.2-1.
(In reply to comment #2) > I can umount the mount manually and that works fine. I don't have any other > types of file systems to experiment with. I have tried kernel 3.3.7-1 and > kernel 3.3.2-1. I had a similar problem recently myself. After a yum update suddenly mounts stopped expiring. I looked high and low and couldn't find what was causing it. It seemsed to be independent of autofs and kernel version. I couldn't find any user space functionality that would cause the elevated reference count the way it appeared in the kernel (preventing mounts from expiring). It was really frustrating. Then, as mysteriously as it appeared, it went away after a yum update. So I'll do a yum update and see if the problem returns. Other than that there isn't much we can do but start by investigating debug logs, but we can get to that after I update my system.
I just set up an NFS share on an ancient Ubuntu machine and was able to mount the share, but it also failed to umount the share after the timeout period. Again, I was able to umount the NFS share manually.
I have a feeling that one or more of the packages in this transaction is the culprit, as I have been having problems with network mounts ever since (CIFS mounts becoming stale and locking up processes after the Windows machine has been powered off for a period and then powered back on with no file access during the down period -- this worked before 95% of the time). Attached is the output of yum history info. I had never tried automount before the upgrade shown below so I can't say for certain that it caused the problem, but I suspect there is some relation. I hope that this information helps to clarify the problem, and that it isn't just white noise. :) [root@sirius ~]# yum history info 22 Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Transaction ID : 22 Begin time : Thu Jun 7 14:46:03 2012 Begin rpmdb : 1414:a2e6713b48b744f1d7db94d7ee47152abf776dc0 End time : 14:51:25 2012 (5 minutes) End rpmdb : 1437:8cdc2442ecd2e28cd39f9b5e413ff5f0ddca5359 User : mythtv <mythtv> Return-Code : Success Command Line : update Transaction performed with: Installed rpm-4.9.1.3-1.fc16.x86_64 @updates Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * fedora: mirror.cogentco.com * rpmfusion-free: mirror.us.leaseweb.net * rpmfusion-free-updates: mirror.us.leaseweb.net * rpmfusion-nonfree: mirror.us.leaseweb.net * rpmfusion-nonfree-updates: mirror.us.leaseweb.net * updates: mirror.cogentco.com Updated yum-3.4.3-23.fc16.noarch ? Another thing I found was that if I booted into run level 3 mounts would expire normally so I concluded it was related to a GUI package. And it was independent of the file system of the mount. If you can get a chance to check and any of these things and find they aren't true then we are looking for something different in your case. btw, I haven't had a chance to try a yum update yet. I'll get to that soon as I can.

And it was independent of the file system > of the mount. > I just tried booting into run level 3 and the NFS and CIFS mounts did not expire. :( I guess it's something else in my case.
Does this output help narrow down the issue? I've done a yum update and the problem has come back for me also. However, in runllevel 3 mounts do expire for me. I'll go through the discovery process again, maybe some other cause will occur to me during that process.
Hello @IBM Will you commit the test for this bug?

I finally discovered what was causing this on my system. For me it's a side effect of systemd making the root file system shared at boot. The following assumes you are using systemd. I don't know if you use anything that relies on the root file system being marked as shared so take care if you try and test this. To check run "mount --make-private /", as root, and check if the autofs expiry now works. I don't know yet if existing mounts will then start to expire so do the check from a startup of autofs when there aren't any automount managed mounts present. To restore the system run "mount --make-shared /", as root. Ian

I see now that it is suffucient to mark the autofs mount point as private ("mount --make-private <autofs mount point>") to resolve the expire problem (assuming your problem is the same). And I also see that marking marking the mount point shared again doesn't cause the problem to return.
I upgraded this system to Fedora 17 and unfortunately I can't test this easily at the moment. :(
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '16'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
