Hmmm... reading a bit more around the intertubes, I found some evidence that this setup might not be supported by Z77 chipset. Also motherboard manual suggests that two monitors can be connected to any of the outputs (VGA, DVI-D, HDMI, DisplayPort). Can somebody well informed confirm this? If so then this bug is not a bug.

Ivybridge does have "3 pipe support", but it's subtle. The subtlety is that the hardware only has two PLLs for generating the clocks for those three pipes, which means three pipes only work if two or more of them use identical video timings. The 1920x1200 modes you happen to have for VGA1 and HDMI2 do have identical timings, so afaik this should work. Can I get a more complete dmesg from trying this with drm.debug=4 on the kernel command line?
Created attachment 596155 [details] dmesg with drm.debug=4 Attached dmesg with drm.debug=4. Lots of messages so it seems like not all stuff ends up as output of dmesg. If something is needed before the beginning of this file, let me know and I will grep /var/log/messages accordingly.
There is a disturbing side effect to having three displays connected: X fails to start. First I observed it when I logged off KDE -- X failed to start: no login manager, just console with bunch of messages as in comment #5. Well, I was on a mission to reboot with drm.debug=4 so no loss here. After reboot with debug param X failed to start again. This is rather bad for couple of reasons: 1. Inexperienced user has no clue what is wrong and will just assume that his Fedora is broken. 2. Even after unplugging the HDMI cable and "init 5" as root on the console plymouth showed up but could not finish filling up the "Fedora infinity cloud" so X wouldn't start. I'm not sure what's the reason for init 5 not starting X eventually in this case. I see plymouth and systemd at the top of "top" but it's not like there's any particular CPU usage worth mentioning there (hovering around 0%, with plymouth sometimes at up to 2%). This may need more investigation. Wouldn't it be better if X started in some limited capacity, even on just one display? In one way it bumps up severity of this issue (since we have clear failure to start). On the other hand it's not like there are that many crazy people hooking whatever displays they can to all the video ports they can find ;-)
Quote from the motherboard user guide (page 2-39) I mentioned earlier: "This motherboard comes with multiple VGA output that features desktop extension on two monitors. You can connect two monitors to any of two of the onboard VGA, DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort ports." http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1155/P8Z77-V_LE/E7257_P8Z77-V_LE.pdf It's a bit vague and funnily enough on other pages the manual boasts that the Ivy Bridge supports output to 3 monitors... Consistent and clear message to the customer seems to be lost somewhere between the lines, even if in one place they talk about CPU and another place about motherboard.
Hi, I have the same problem using a Dell Latitude E6230. The problem is worse if I boot the laptop with all screens attached: intel fbdev complains on console, and xorg can't even configure 2 external screens: Case 1: booting without HDMI2 nor HDMI3 attached - enabling LVDS1 and HDMI2 and HDMI3 fails with crtc error - disabling LVDS and subsequently enabling HDMI2 and HDMI3 succeeds (but doing this in one step fails with crtc error) Case2: booting with both HDMI2 and HDMI3 attached - enabling LVDS1 and HDMI2 and HDMI3 fails with crtc error - disabling LVDS and subsequently enabling HDMI2 and HDMI3 fails - enabling LVDS1 and HDMI2 or HDMI3 succeeds -- xrandr --verbose -- Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3600 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Identifier: 0x42 Timestamp: Just hit the same problem with a Lenovo X230 and two external displays (1 DVI and 1 VGA). Running F17 with kernel 3.6.2-4 and Xorg 1.12.3.
I am hitting the same problem during boot with ubuntu, system went to console mode after the following message, and I can't startup windows manager. I am with two external display one is VGA another is DVI. [ 17.861653] [drm:intel_crtc_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:7] $ Xorg -version X.Org X Server 1.13.1.901 (1.13.2 RC 1) Release Date: 2013-01-03 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-32-xen x86_64 Ubuntu Current Operating System: Linux guest 3.7.0-7-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Sat Dec 15 16:34:25 UTC 2012 x86_64 Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.7.0-7-generic root=UUID=a4ba620a-89df-4292-93fb-6dcebc217812 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 Build Date: 04 January 2013 11:17:34AM xorg-server 2:1.13.1.901+git20130104+server-1.13-branch.3a8c618a-0ubuntu0ricotz~quantal (For technical support please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support) Current version of pixman: 0.28.2 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
One workaround for now is unplug one connection such as VGA, and startup, then plugin after login to window manager, it can work.
The problem still exists with F18, running 3.7.8-202.fc18.x86_64 and xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.13.2-2.fc18.x86_64 / xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.21.2-1.fc18.x86_64
I have the same problem with a Sapphire VAPOR-X HD7770 OC Version 1GB (2xDVI/HDMI/DP), when i try to use 2 DVI displays and one HDMI.
(In reply to comment #6) > Ivybridge does have "3 pipe support", but it's subtle. The subtlety is that > the hardware only has two PLLs for generating the clocks for those three > pipes, which means three pipes only work if two or more of them use > identical video timings. > > The 1920x1200 modes you happen to have for VGA1 and HDMI2 do have identical > timings, so afaik this should work. Can I get a more complete dmesg from > trying this with drm.debug=4 on the kernel command line? See this for a possible explanation for some of the issues with triple-display setups: http://vr-zone.com/articles/most-desktop-ivy-bridge-systems-won-t-support-three-displays/15407.html The net is that there are significant restrictions on which outputs can share a PLL, and it may not be possible at all with certain motherboards. There's nothing that an OS or driver can do to change this. What can hopefully be improved, however, is the way in which X deals with "impossible" configurations. Currently, X tries to use all 3 displays, dies, and leaves the system back at a text console with the keyboard unusable. (Network access to the system still works.) dmesg output and X.org log coming. (Note that these are from a ThinkPad T430s which *can* drive 3 displays when HDMI2 and HDMI3 are connected to identical displays.)

i can confirm triple-display working fine when 2 of the three monitors share the same resolution. i initially attempted to run a set of 900p, 768p, 1080p monitors concurrently, received "xrandr: Configure crtc 2 failed". 900p, 1080p, 1080p otoh works.
tried this in F19 on 3 displays LVDS1 connected 1600x900 VGA1 connected primary 1920x1080 and third one $ xrandr --output HDMI3 --mode 1280x1024 xrandr: Configure crtc 2 failed failed even on same resolution on two display and different on built-in can post logs if necessary adding myself to cc
I got three (external) monitors working on my x230. I'm using Gentoo, but I guess it's more or less the same on all distributions. The important hint that got me on the right track came from Ian Pilchers link above. First some details: - used kernels: 3.9.9, 3.11-rc4 - xrandr: 1.3.5 - xorg-server: 1.13.4 I got two identical (19") monitors and a third (22"), different one. I'm using a docking station with my Lenovo Thinkpad x230 (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3360M CPU). If I connect one of the 19" monitors + the 22" monitors over Displayport (one Displayport per monitor, in case that is not obvious), and the second 19" monitor via VGA, I can't get all three to work. However, if I connect both 19" monitors via Displayport and the 22" monitor via VGA, then it works. Also: If all three monitors are plugged in on boot, then they will all work during bootup (all showing the same output). The notebooks screen will then be black. After bootup I can just execute my xrandr script (see below) and the monitors work fine. If however, I plug in the screens after bootup and try to execut the script, I get an error message. I then have to disable the notebooks screen first and only enable one (any one of them, doesn't matter which) of the external screens. After that, I can then enable them all with the script. Hope this helps anyone. If you need more information, just ask. Here's the script I use: xrandr --output DP3 --off --output DP2 --off --output DP1 --off --output HDMI3 --off --output HDMI2 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 2960x26 --rotate normal --output HDMI1 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x26 --rotate normal --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1280x0 --rotate normal And here's xrandr's output (with all three monitors working): Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 4240 x 1050, maximum 32767 x 32767 LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Identifier: 0x42 Timestamp: 297554 Subpixel: horizontal rgb Clones: CRTCs: 0 1 2 Hi guys, I ran into this bug on my F19 x86_64 on DELL Latitude E6330. The interesting thing is, that the triple monitor setup (1366x768 via LVDS and two 1920x1080's via DVI-D) works flawlessly with kernels up to 3.10.11-200, but with 3.11.x I get this abovementioned CRTC error. So it might be connected to the kernel.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 18 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 18. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '18'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 18 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
