Description of problem: I have a Dell Inspiron 7520 (15R Special Edition), and the CPU fan is running at its maximum speed most of the time. Initially I thought it was the ATI Radeon card fan, but I have already turned the card off (via vga_switcheroo), and also set the power profile as 'low' (according to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36438). I have i8kutils installed and running, and the output of the 'sensors' command tells me it is the processor fan that is running. I had the chance to test it on Windows, and the fan speed is apparently OK there (i.e., it runs way less than on GNU/Linux). It is also important to mention that the fan eventually decreases its speed, though for a short period of time. The fan also turns on even when the computer is idle. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): kernel-3.4.5-2.fc17.x86_64 i8kutils-1.33-2.fc17.x86_64 How reproducible: Every time. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Just use the computer normally. 2. 3. Actual results: Fan runs most of the time with its maximum speed. Expected results: Fan runs normally. Additional info: The output of 'sensors', with the fan running in maximum speed: #> sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +106.0°C) temp2: +29.8°C (crit = +106.0°C) radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +49.0°C coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +47.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 0: +44.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 1: +40.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 2: +47.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 3: +45.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) i8k-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device Right Fan: 135000 RPM CPU: +46.0°C As one can see, the temperatures are normal and i8k reports the fan speed to be its maximum, which is absurd. I am with the same laptop and I have the same problem. I didn't manage to install sensors correctly. I installed windows 7 on it and the fan doesn't run at maximum speed.
(In reply to comment #1) > I am with the same laptop and I have the same problem. I didn't manage to > install sensors correctly. > I installed windows 7 on it and the fan doesn't run at maximum speed. FYI, I am using i8kmon to control the fans. It took me quite a while for me to figure out a good setting for it, and here is what I am using: # Switch to state(1) on 55 celsius set config(0) {{-1 0} -1 55 -1 55} # Switch back to state(0) on 48 celsius # Switch to state(2) on 75 celsius set config(1) {{-1 1} 48 75 48 75} # Switch back to state(1) on 60 celsius set config(2) {{-1 2} 60 128 60 128} If you did not manage to install the sensor correctly, please open another bug for it. We need to push this issue further.
Hello, It's been quite some time without an answer. Now I'm running with: 3.6.8-2.fc17.x86_64 And I am *still* seeing this annoying behaviour. I've been using i8kutils since I opened this bug report, and the software does a good job at keeping the cooler quieter, but unfortunately it is not as complete as one might expect: you can only configure 3 different speeds with it (see comment#2), and it takes some time before you figure out the right values for temperatures. Anyway, this is a ping to see if we can move this issue forward. Please let me know if you need more recent data about my system. Thanks.
Same problem with latest update (3.7.5-201.fc18.x86_64). Tested in win8 and the fan is mostly time off
Yet another update. Now I am using the kernel version 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64, and I still see the problem. As I said in comment#3, i8kmon is not a good solution because it has only 3 pre-defined different speeds for the fan, but to make things worse, I found that it has a bug when the computer goes to sleep state and then gets back from it (but this is another issue with another package, of course). Anyway, is there any other kind of input that I could provide to make the resolution of this bug easier? This issue is *pretty* annoying, it makes the battery life very short, so let's try to get this solved, please. I am changing the priority to "high" since it is affecting me badly these last days...
Yet another update. Still with kernel 3.7.3-101.fc17.x86_64. When I suspend to RAM and bring the machine back, the fan becomes much more active. The temperature is always near of above 62 degrees (celsius), though the CPU load is the same as before the suspension. I really can't tell why it acts like this. If I reboot the machine, the fan goes back to the "normal" state, i.e., at level "1" (between 48 and 67 degrees) on i8kmon (CPU load still the same as before).
According to <https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57051#c6>, there is nothing that can be done in the Linux kernel in order to fix this bug. IIUC, this is a BIOS issue. FWIW, updating to the latest available BIOS from Dell (version A09) didn't fix the issue. I'm closing this bug as CANTFIX because of that. I will still keep an eye on this issue, since it it *very* annoying.
