Using gnome-shell - hit the corner and pressed "Empathy" from dock with favourite apps. Of course does not happen everytime, but it is second time it happened to me. Note that trying to run "Empathy" was the first thing I did after starting computer and logging in.

In other words - I don't know what caused this problem.

Comment 9 Andrig Miller 2012-09-04 19:33:20 UTC
I launched Cheese on my fourth workspace. I put Cheese in fullscreen mode, and recorded a video. Played with some of the effects, but set everything back to no effect before doing anything else, and I had already stopped recording a video. Then I was trying to return the application to window mode, but couldn't seem to do it, so I hit Ctrl-Q to exit the application (don't know what key combination toggles between fullscreen and window mode still), and then tried to start it again, and that's when the X server crashed.

Straight out crash. I had gedit open, a terminal and Google Chrome running youtube music.

I thought I'd report it as it was pretty severe, however, it recovered well. Was straight back up and into Fedora.

This happened after a cold boot. I plugged in my iPhone before the system initialized, and I think that caused a problem with the network interface.

Comment 13 Cody Shell 2012-09-06 22:08:31 UTC
I went to "Displays" under system settings and I was immediately logged out.
Running dual monitors, 23 inch apple cinema display through ADC to DVI converter into ATI graphics card. This is my main display.
Also as a secondary display, an LG HDTV through HDMI. I just added the apple display and changed it to my primary when it crashed.

I do a right click on the gnome volume control icon in the bar on the top (to change the default output device). The xserver crashes immediately and I'm taken to the login screen.

The problem only occurs if Exaile is running.

Comment 49 Felix Schwarz 2012-11-09 14:57:03 UTC
At least on my system I can trigger the bug reliably: Start Exaile (exaile-3.3.0-1.fc17.noarch) and then right-click on the gnome volume icon. I don't even play any music but the xserver crashes immediately.

Comment 50 Felix Schwarz 2012-11-09 15:05:05 UTC
Sorry, I wasn't 100% precise: First load a song in an Exaile playlist (in my case it's encoded in ogg vorbis) and start playing. Hit "pause".

You can now exit exaile if you like (so it saves that state, making it easy to reproduce the crash).

If you open Exaile again, the same song should be still loaded in the playlist but in a "paused" state. Now right click the volume icon and left click 'sound settings' (not sure if that's the right English label, in German that is 'Klangeinstellungen').
=> immediate X crash.

The problem doesn't happen if I don't have a song loaded in Exaile.

Just wanted to mention that I can't reproduce the bug anymore (comment 50) since the last xorg-x11-server update (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2012-19339/xorg-x11-server-1.12.4-1.fc17)

Comment 61 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 07:06:56 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 62 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 18:51:55 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
