Using system. Spontaneous X crash. Screen corruption occurred.

The system went back to "console". A message from nouveou appeared, "cannot idle", then after 15 seconds back to corrupted desktop screen, then back to console, message appeared again etc.

Had to reboot.

This has happened numerous times over the last week. In between I did a kernel update from the 3.4 to 3.5.

Current kernel is 3.5.2-3.fc17.x86_64

i was copying a file from the phone using bluetooth, i pressed the windows key to display the gnome3 activity menu, i don't remember if it crashed before it was displayed or if it was displayed and i started typing to filter entries, but that's when it crashed. i had only nautilus and firefox open, more or less.

Comment 20 Dario Castellarin 2012-09-16 11:02:00 UTC
I can confirm this crash happens shortly after I resume my laptop after a suspend to ram, 100% of the times.
System hangs up, screen get corrupted and then falls back to console, where it shows multiple messages of nouveau being unable to idle channels 2 and 3.
My laptop has a GeForce 8600 GT card, never had problems with nouveau before.

This kernel http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=354829 has fixed the boot-up problem. Nouveau works, X starts but the whole system is very slow. Kernel hangs a lot.

Comment 25 paul.purdon.martin 2012-09-23 14:43:56 UTC
basically same as problem with kernel 3.5.3
:
installed kernel 3.5.4
booted / suspended / resumed
started firefox
-> immediate catastrophic screen-flickering effective hang
nouveau apparently reporting some problem with channel 2/3 as before.
(With very careful timing you can ctrl-alt-F1 and term log in as root and send shutdown command
in between the scrambled screen mode cycles.)

Comment 31 Matthew Saltzman 2012-10-04 16:03:51 UTC
Seems to be related to docking/undocking. Was working while docked, then undocked, then docked again (when I dock, I have to switch to a VC to prevent hangs, but that's probably a different bug). Then when the screen went to sleep, it never woke up. Switching to a VC didn't help. I rebooted with CTRL-ALT-DEL from the VC.

With laptop docked, X freezes or crashes when the screen blanks. I still have keyboard

but I'm not sure what I am running in gnome-shell that could cause the problem.

I just got one of these in the middle of browsing. Have we ruled out flaky hardware? My NVidia card is ancient [00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)], the monitor is semi-b0rked, the USB ports are flaky and one of them had a USB drive plugged in when this happened. This isn't the first time this has happened but it is the first time I've been able to get a bug report. I've been assuming this was a hardware problem since it started happening.

I'm getting graphic glitches all the time. When I boot up Fedora everything looks just fine, but then after a while the borders of the windows are getting weird and all the other graphics like, the icons in the applications are looking weird (mostly white and some lines of different colors) and the background becomes some sort of collage of all the graphics that were shown on the pc since i started the session.
Also the color of the text inside the programs changes.

Sorry, should be "restarted" instead "started".
Computer bring me the console, after then started X again and loaded login page.

Comment 53 Matthew Saltzman 2012-10-28 17:43:43 UTC
In my case, the failure to resume after screen blank when docked was tied to a particular userid. I nuked and recreated that userid (I have the files backed up), and the problem was eliminated. Both users used gnome-shell as window manager. Not sure where to look to find what the difference might be, though. If anyone has a question about that, I can post whatever files you think are relevant.

Not sure if it's related to this issue, but the machine (Dell E6410 laptop with nVidia GT218 [NVS 3100M]) fails to resume when suspended after changing powertop settings to "good". Also not sure how to debug that.

Resumed from suspend after docking with X active. (Also happens if I dock after resuming with X active. If I resume, switch to a VC, then dock, then switch back, all is well.)

Comment 75 Mark Walker 2013-02-03 18:06:37 UTC
I have up to four computers on a TRENDnet TK-407 USB KVM switch, and I wonder if that's component of the problem. I've been noticing that when I switch back to this machine, the screen resolution often is greatly reduced (larger text and icons, etc.). I can reset X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace even when not logged in (naturally lose my session when I have to do that when logged in), and that corrects the resolution. Still this time, I had to hard boot (hold power button until shutdown) to get out of an unresponsive system (not sure if the loss of responsiveness is a break in the USB comm to the KVM switch). This is pure speculation, but perhaps that might help.

I was working in GIMP - mouse pointer froze up then a GPU error was displayed on a black background. I'm convinced it's the Noveau drivers and GIMP causes the drivers to crash the system. It's time to install the Nvidia drivers - at least they work, and don't crash the system. Note I have a Nvidia graphics card.

Description of problem:
Upgraded F16->F17 using preupgrade 1 week ago.
xorg-x11-server started crashing yesterday.

It happened 3 times, once while I was present.

I noticed responsiveness drop, immediately saw that memory usage was high so must have been swapping, but didn't get to a terminal fast enough to check what was leaking before X crashed.

It then apparently happened twice overnight, so the final time must have been simply at the login screen.

Comment 87 James Hogan 2013-05-31 14:27:52 UTC
I don't know if it's related, but I'm finding that Xorg starts to use 100% CPU usage before it dies which makes the system slightly sluggish.

perf top says:
 77.01% Xorg [.] GetXIDRange
  1.82% Xorg [.] AvailableID.part.0

and using perf top to annotate GetXIDRange shows 97% of that time on "cmp %r13d,%r14d" at beginning of a loop:

  0.48 │ 6e:┌─→mov 0x8(%r12),%r14d

  0.81 │ │ test %r12,%r12

It's starting to get pretty annoying now, its happening within a few hours each time. I don't know what changed that could cause it.

Description of problem:
I was just reading internet pages about simple-scan issues in linux, when the machine just locked up as I was scrolling down a webpage. I saw there was drive activity, but the keybord and mice had no resonse, mouse pointer didn't move nor did the keybord show any life.

I had to kill the system with the power button and reboot it.

As soon as I was logged in again, the automatic bug report tool popped up and showed there had been 3 new problems listed, the last one in the list being this one here - Xorg server crash.
The 2 previous bug reports in the list appear to have been generated at the time my machine locked up with the first of those being a Kerneloops error, followed a second later by a Xorg error. Both those errors only had partial reports generated so there's nothing to be forwarded.

Comment 91 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 07:40:30 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 92 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 20:03:31 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
