Description Xavier Bachelot 2012-08-29 11:54:57 UTC
Description of problem:
libsmbios 2.2.26, the version currently shipped in EPEL, does not work with OpenManage 7.1. Dell is shipping 2.2.27 in their own repo and this does work.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.2.26-3.el5

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install OMSA 7.1 with no packages overiding packages from EPEL.
2. Start OMSA.
3.

Actual results:
OMSA doesn't start.

Expected results:
OMSA does start.

Additional info:
The same apply to EL6.
The issue has been discussed on linux-poweredge mailing list.

Comment 1 Xavier Bachelot 2013-12-18 11:11:15 UTC
The issue is still current with OpenManage 7.3.1 repos. Can this be fixed please ?

Comment 2 Xavier Bachelot 2014-01-16 14:25:53 UTC
Anyone ?
Latest release is 2.2.28 and dates back to 2011, June 29th. It's available in Fedora, but EPEL is lagging behind.

Same issue was reported by Robert Scheck

"
the recent update of libsmbios in EPEL 7 from

 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2015-7500/libsmbios-2.2.28-13.el7

breaks Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA): "dsm_om_shrsvc: DSM SA Shared Services cannot start on an unsupported system. See the Dell Systems Software Support Matrix for a list of supported systems."

This happens because libsmbios-2.2.28-13.el7 replaces the same packages shipped by Dell OMSA (as third party packages) at

 OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-LX-8.1.0-1518.RHEL7.x86_64_A00/linux/custom/RHEL7/Remote-Enablement/x86_64/smbios-utils-bin-2.2.27-4.4.1.el7.x86_64.rpm

Somehow these two different libsmbios versions do not agree with each other about the result.

Basically, this is easily reproducible: Dell server with RHEL or CentOS 7, install OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-LX-8.1.0-1518.RHEL7.x86_64_A00, enable EPEL 7 and run a "yum update". Reboot the system and Dell OMSA is no longer up and running but the logs show the error message above.

I understand that Dell OMSA is third party, but it would be great to have EPEL and Dell OMSA working together without any nasty repo excludes or any similar stuff.

I have fixed it upstream.

Nice to see this years old bug being taking care of. I'm glad EL7 is being dealt with, but what about EL5 and EL6 ?
Also, on a side note it might be nice to be able to use the system libs rather than bundling in OpenManage (say, the xerces lib that is causing trouble these days, but there are most probably others).

Ill be pushing the patch to other branches as well.
I have been maintaining libsmbios upstream for over a year now. You can expect more updates to be made available on libsmbios + fedora.

Is there a BZ for this. More details on this will help...

Fedora EPEL 5 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-03-31. Fedora EPEL 5
is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora
or Fedora EPEL, please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If
you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current
release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
