This occurred at the point where I clicked on my 4th existing partition (NTFS), that was mounted at /home/c-drive-old on the existing F17 installation, that the DVD TC6 installer is trying to upgrade.

The installer is not trying to upgrade. The custom storage configuration interface is just not yet capable of assigning mountpoints to pre-existing devices. The old installations are there for your reference -- not as install targets.

The old installations are there for your reference -- not as > install targets. So, is the UI plan to allow right-click and "Use in my F18 install" for each partition ? And ctrl/shift-click a group, and "use selected in my F18 install" ? (If not, it's more complicated than it needs to be!) I guess a "do not format" by default, with hints that "this was the system drive and should probably be formatted to ensure a trouble free installation" on the "/" ,"/usr" and "/var" would be good.
Is it possible to use the installer to manually re-use those partitions ? Seems like it wants to create new partitions. 2. It's really annoying that expanding the + Existing system item, contracts the New Fedra 18-Alpha-Tc6 item, and vice-versa. It means you can't read and enter the information directly, since both are never visible at once :-(

The rightmost button on the toolbar near the lower-left of the custom storage screen displays help text. Hopefully it will be of some assistance to you in figuring out how to assign mountpoints to your existing filesystems. Any failures resulting from trying to create new partitions on a full disk should be handled in such a way as to allow you to continue working. Please file new bug reports for any cases to the contrary. Thanks.
