Crash warning box appeared on screen reporting that a "kernel problem" had occured. I was booting into Windows and the computer restarted. I then tried to get into Fedora, but after the initial boot splash (OS selection), it hung on a blank screen and would go no further. I rebooted into Fedora, but strace didn't seem to reveal anything, at least not that I could tell.

[root@hp-dv2000 buzz]# strace -s 1024 -o log /usr/bin/hddtemp -n -q /dev/sda

I was connected to my home wireless network, and maybe the signal was weak (the router is about 4 meters away from the laptop) and I couldn't get any connection. So I rebooted the router and re-connected to the network and it went fine, but this error report came all of the sudden. So apart from the unexpected crash the re-connection went smooth.

I installed Fedora 17 KDE from a live CD
The first couple times it booted regularly
After that, the normal boot failed regularly and got stuck with some errors
One way to boot the system is to boot it in recovery mode, then do 'exit'
This does not work all the time and in any case during boot I get the error message above "BUG:soft lockup ...."
also, at the boot start I get an error msg that a file font True is not found

Note that
this is a laptop ACER Aspire 8930G
1. Opensuse 11.4, on another partition, boots without problems - so does Win 7
2. Opensuse 12.2 boots with several problems
3. I tried several other recent distributions (Ubuntu, Minty, Knoppix, Mageia), and they all fail to boot,
