invisible sections screen (see also weird rendering around the tabs)

Description of problem:

I find it hard to describe this problem, and it might have been reported before. Since late last week my screen has problems with rendering characters, or actually with parts of the screen itself. For example in firefox there will often be white blocks where icons should be (see screenshot, also see weird characters in the tabs), or if selecting a file to open, most of the files/filenames in a folder will be invisible. This refreshes correctly after a few seconds, or if I scroll. It feels rather scary and surely reduces productivity. Restarting didn't help. x11 problem perhaps?

Am using KDE, kernel 3.5.4-2.fc17.x86_64, fully up-to-date.

Rebooting into the previous two kernels (3.5.4-1, 3.5.3-1) doesn't solve the problem

What graphics hardware? (I've reassigned this to one driver, might need fixed if you have something different.)

Comment 3 Maarten 2012-10-09 09:12:13 UTC
KInfocenter gives:

Driver MESA DRI Intel Q45/Q43 (Tungsten Graphics, Inc)
OpenGL/ES version 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
Kernel module i915

3D Accelerator:
4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
Subvendor HP, revision 03

Main processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8500 3.16 GHz

After applying today's updates (kernel 3.5.5-2.fc17.x86_64) things seem to work fine now. Cautiously optimistic, thanks.
