Description of problem: This is a sort of "meta bug report". An update to texlive-2012 modifies kpathsea path in such way that the previous locations, rooted in /usr/share/texmf/tex/, are no longer searched. The problem is that assorted packages are keeping their files there and after such update these files are "lost". I do not have a full list of such packages but I happen to know that at least the following packages from the current rawhide are affected: asymptote-2.18-1.fc19.x86_64 tex-cm-lgc-0.5-20.fc18.noarch tetex-elsevier-0.1.20090917-5.fc18.noarch tex-preview-11.86-10.fc19.noarch latex2html-2008-7.fc18.noarch linuxdoc-tools-0.9.67-2.fc18.x86_64 gnuplot-latex-4.6.0-2.fc18.noarch.rpm All these, and probably more, suddenly "break". One can file bug reports for every of those packages, and make maintainters likely grumpy as they will be forced to switch file locations depending on which texlive version happens to be in a distro, but who is responsible for a complete review of all packages and finding what else is affected too? Maybe it would be better to adjust texmf.cnf in such way that old locations are searched as well? The other change is a move of TEXMFLOCAL from a rather logical /usr/local/share/texmf to $TEXMFROOT/../texmf-local. That will silently break all local additions/modifications as well. I can clearly adjust a configuration on my systems to work around this breakage but is this extra pain really necessary? It can be a serious trouble for many users. If some of packages above should be replaced on an update by something in texlive-2012 that did not happen. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): texlive-2012-3.20120926_r27815.fc19.x86_64
You are right. I'm on it.
