Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Same issue for other HP I have (8470p) with

Audio codec: ATI R6xx HDMI
Audio: ATI Turks/Whistler HDMI Audio (Radeon HD 6000 Series) [1002:aa90]

Seems it happen only on HPs, Lenovos working fine via DP->HDMI reduction also with sound.

I've seen something a bit similar under pulseaudio #878980

Comment 12 Ken Benoit 2015-11-13 13:40:15 UTC
Retested with RHEL6.7 on the same hardware (02:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation High Definition Audio Controller [10de:0be3] (rev 01)) and was unable to get audio to play over the HDMI port. Tried both setting the output through GNOME then playing a video in the browser, and playing an audio file over the plughw with aplay.

Comment 13 Jaroslav Kysela 2015-11-13 14:18:26 UTC
Could you attach 'dmesg' output and 'alsa-info.sh --no-upload' for the 6.7 kernel?

Comment 16 Jaroslav Kysela 2015-11-13 14:52:25 UTC
Have you tried 'speaker-test -Dplughw:1,7' or 'speaker-test -Dplug:hdmi:1' ?

Comment 17 Jaroslav Kysela 2015-11-13 14:53:58 UTC
Also, please, provide output from /proc/asound/card1/eld* files.

Comment 19 Ken Benoit 2015-11-19 15:25:08 UTC
speaker-test -Dplughw:1,7 worked after a delay of about 2-3 seconds. Also, aplay -Dplughw:1,7 worked as well given an audio file longer than 2-3 seconds in length. speaker-test -Dplug:hdmi:1 did not work at all.

Comment 20 Joseph Kachuck 2016-04-28 20:12:27 UTC
Hello,
This was not able to be fixed in RHEL 6.8. This is now requested for RHEL 6.9.

Thank You
