Description John Schmitt 2012-11-17 17:19:17 UTC
Skype makes sounds when friends log off, log on, and other times. The sounds skype makes are played for only a second. pavucontrol lists skype for that brief period. This is not enough time to change the volume at which skype makes those sounds. Make this possible.

Comment 1 Julian Sikorski 2012-11-17 17:28:49 UTC
I asked on the pulseaudio mailing list, will let you know once I hear back from the devs.

Comment 2 Julian Sikorski 2012-11-20 06:33:43 UTC
The interim answer I got so far is that you can use gnome-control-center to change the volume of all the alert sounds.

Comment 3 John Schmitt 2012-11-20 07:31:35 UTC
There must be some sort of misunderstanding. I just tried that. I have skype running and gnome-control-center open on the Sound icon, with the Applications tab shown. When skype makes a quick beep sound, it shows on the sound window for a brief second and then disappears. How are you supposed to change the volume when it doesn't stay up long enough to even grab the slider?

Comment 4 Julian Sikorski 2012-11-20 17:05:13 UTC
Actually I just checked, it works with pavucontrol too. Provided you have Skype 4.1 installed, you can control the alerts volume using playback → system sounds.

Comment 5 John Schmitt 2012-12-31 01:07:11 UTC
This barely works.

echo '(SayText "Hello")' | festival --pipe

It took me several attempts at changing the output with pavucontrol. I don't know if it's ideal to leave the stream displayed longer, but I would take it.

Thanks for all you effort on this, Julian.

I think the idea is that the short sounds should be tagged as system ones, and as such the slider for them is present permanently.

Comment 7 John Schmitt 2012-12-31 16:32:22 UTC
Thank you. Does festival make system sounds? Who makes that decision and how is that set?

Comment 8 Julian Sikorski 2013-01-07 17:53:25 UTC
I'm sorry it took me so long to respond.
Would it be possible for you to ask this question on PA mailing list [1]? You are likely to get better answers without the middlemen.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 06:14:39 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 10 John Schmitt 2013-07-04 18:02:33 UTC
Some (sysem?) sound keeps beeping occasionally. I still don't know what's causing it. It goes by too fast in the volume control program to see who's making that noise.

Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
