Description Sam Tygier 2012-12-18 08:32:52 UTC
Description of problem:
when running the mate desktop i can't suspend.
closing the lid does not trigger suspend (works in gnome3)
pressing fn+F4 does not trigger suspend (works in gnome3)
System->Shutdown->Suspend ends the session and takes me back to GDM without suspending

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
mate-power-manager-1.5.1-4.fc18.x86_64

How reproducible:
everytime

Additional info:
i installed fedora 18 from the beta live cd.
There is mention on the mate forums that suspend only works with MDM (instead of GDM), but MDM does not seem to be in the F18 repos.

Hi,

I also have the same issue on Fedora 18, suspend is broken in any form; This isn't a distribution problem, but instead seems to be an integration issue with one of the following components:

 * mate-power-manager
 * mate-screensaver

For what I can testify, all the relevant infra-structure packages are present, in our case, we want to make upower and pm-utils are installed. This checks out.

I don't get a ~/.xsession-errors (something is broken on my side), and syslog logs don't really point to anything relevant to this issue.

Also, suspend from menu isn't working and just logs out my user; This leads me to believe that some components might not have been built with Session Management (xext, sm, ice). So I have to review all packages and make sure we have proper session manager in all relevant packages and take it from there.

We're on it.

NM

Additionally we're missing Hibernation functionality, interesting :)

Re-assigning to Dan :)

Taking back the bug to me

Comment 5 Nelson Marques 2012-12-21 21:07:55 UTC
I have fixed this issue, I'm currently waiting for the ACLs to be able to update the required packages.

Once they are on testing I will report back!

Comment 8 Sam Tygier 2012-12-24 15:29:43 UTC
this fixes suspending from the system menu.

I still can't suspend by closing the lid or pressing fn+F4. i have suspend when lid closed selected in mate-power-manager.

Comment 9 Nelson Marques 2012-12-24 17:40:59 UTC
It is working for me when the lid is closed; maybe you have other packages out of synch... try this:

 $ sudo yum clean all
 $ sudo yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing

Reboot and check if anything changed. Some of the latest packages have been built using buildroot overrides, it might be that some other package update is required. You might want to check updates for mate-screensaver and mate-power-manager since both of this packages also are used for suspend/hibernate:

 1. mate-screensaver is responsible for locking/unlocking the screen;
 2. mate-power-manager is infra-structure package to interact with upower and pm-utils which should handle the power management.

Comment 10 Sam Tygier 2012-12-24 21:06:45 UTC
those commands got me an update to mate-screensaver, then i rebooted. still closing the lid, or pressing fn+F4 do not trigger a suspend.

i have
pm-utils-1.4.1-22.fc18
upower-0.9.18-2.fc18
mate-power-manager-1.5.1-3.fc18
mate-screensaver-1.5.1-1.fc18

Comment 11 Nelson Marques 2012-12-24 21:14:32 UTC
I have different versions:

[nmarques@localhost ~]$ rpm -qi mate-screensaver
Name        : mate-screensaver
Version     : 1.5.1
Release     : 2.fc18

[nmarques@localhost ~]$ rpm -qi mate-power-manager
Name        : mate-power-manager
Version     : 1.5.1
Release     : 4.fc18

This RPMs are from my local rebuilds for testing, but they have been pushed; it's a few days most likely before they hit the repository. Lets wait a few days until they hit the repositories.

By the way Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

mate-session-manager-1.5.0-2.fc18 has been pushed to the Fedora 18 stable repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report.

Comment 13 Sam Tygier 2013-01-14 16:14:27 UTC
i have versions that match yours now, but i still suffering from the original bug.

Comment 14 Sam Tygier 2013-01-14 16:18:50 UTC
Possible related: setting keyboard short cuts does not work. Default shortcuts work fine, but if i use system->preferences-keyboard shortcuts to set a new one it does not take effect.

Comment 15 Daryll 2013-01-18 20:33:06 UTC
sudo pm-suspend works fine.
Setting mater-power-manager to suspend on lid close doesn't do anything.

mate-power-manager-1.5.1-4.fc18.x86_64
mate-session-manager-1.5.0-2.fc18.x86_64

Comment 16 Ben Waugh 2013-01-20 10:00:42 UTC
Same problem here with those versions. I am running a newer kernel (3.7.2-204.fc18.x86_64) from the updates-testing repository to get round bug 896429.

Comment 17 caracalbjd 2013-02-05 19:59:20 UTC
I had the same problems but I noticed that things worked under cinnamon so I googled more and saw a note that indicated swicthing from gdm to mdm fixed the issue. Unfortunately there is mo mdm for fedora 18 so I installed and switched to lightdm and now suspend when lid closed works as well as turning off the display when idle both of which were broken when using gdm.

Comment 18 Sam Tygier 2013-02-05 20:48:28 UTC
switching to lightdm solves the issue here too.

(to save folk have to search for how to do this:
sudo yum install lightdm
sudo systemctl disable gdm
sudo systemctl enable lightdm
)
