Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because
the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Xorg.0.log
Filed from caserun https://tcms.engineering.redhat.com/run/52551/#caserun_1883090
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
RHEL6.4-20121211.0
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI R480 [Radeon X850XT (PCIE)] (Primary) [1002:5d52]
01:00.1 Display controller [0380]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI R480 [Radeon X850XT (PCIE)] (Secondary) [1002:5d72]
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Press a key (shift is safest) when booting to display the boot menu.
2. Enter tab at the first boot entry.
3. Add "nomodeset" (without quotes) to the line.
4. Press enter/return to boot.
These steps will not actually be necessary on systems that don't support kernel
mode switching (KMS) but will ensure that the system demonstrates non-KMS
behavior.
1. Press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to switch to the vt.
2. Press Ctrl-Alt-F3 to switch to another vt.
3. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch back to X.
Actual results:
X terminates with:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
(only with nomodeset) I'll attach Xorg.0.log
Expected results:
(That X starts normally)
That the console is visible after switching
That the graphical session is shown onscreen just as it was before switching to
the console
This log only shows an initialization sequence? It doesn't look like it ever gets as far as input init, which I think means before you get to step 3 in your reproducer xserver is actually crashing.
Once you've done through step 3 there, what's in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old ?
Very strange - I reconstructed the same environment but cannot reproduce the bug. I suppose this should get closed unless/until we can reproduce.
