Description Zack Rusin 2013-01-23 23:12:30 UTC
Description of problem:

Starting with the official Fedora 18 release gnome-shell stopped working with the 3D VMware drivers, which is severe because gdm uses it for its greeter which means that it's impossible to login/install the distro. In all of the Fedora 18 betas everything was fine, but in the official release something seems to block gnome-shell from coming up and it seems to be stuck somewhere (it's still possible to switch to tty and nothing seems to be crashing, it just sits there). The screen is stuck on the blue background and the black top menu (Activities, Data/time... stuff) just never appears.
Were there any significant changes between betas and the final release? Or are there some tests/examples that would make debugging this a bit easier? I'm not very (at all) familiar with gnome-shell.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Whatever Fedora 18 official iso's have. I think it's 3.6.2.

How reproducible:
By starting a Fedora 18 iso in any vmware product.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start the Fedora 18 live cd.
2.
3.

Actual results:
gnome-shell doesn't show up

Expected results:
gnome-shell shows up

Comment 1 Zack Rusin 2013-01-29 03:12:29 UTC
This has been fixed in commit dbb2d192de33064ae6cdb799d71c5ac89a6ea8ff in the Mesa3D repository. We can close it or wait until the next stable Mesa3D hits the Fedora 18 repositories (should be 9.0.3) and close it then.

Patch for mesa rpm

Based on Zack's upstream fix in mesa, this patch can be added to the source rpm for fedora 18 to resolve this bug.

Patch for mesa specfile

This patch provides the updates to the specfile to enable the previous patch.

Gnome3 working after patches applied to source rpm's

After the patches are applied and the rpm's are rebuilt VMWare 3d acceleration works with gnome3.

FWIW, I had a bunch of updated coming in yesterday and it works now out of the box.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2013-12-21 10:46:08 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 18 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 18. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '18'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be
able to fix it before Fedora 18 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2014-02-05 18:25:05 UTC
Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
