yum update was very slow the other day and I installed fastestmirror plugin and tried again. But the speed remained equally slow. I found /var/cache/yum/x86_64/18/timedhosts.txt has this suspicious entry: virror.hanoilug.org 99999999999 Excluding this mirror fixed the problem. yum-3.4.3-47.fc18.noarch yum-plugin-fastestmirror-1.1.31-6.fc18.noarch
This entry means fastestmirror failed to contact this mirror (host not found, httpd down, whatever). Fastestmirror plugin does not exclude such mirrors automaticaly, they are only put at the end of the mirror list, and Yum might use them eventually- that explains why excluding it explicitly helped. Added patches to Yum and Urlgrabber to have the fastestmirror data available when selecting mirrors.
