Description Gaston Verhulst 2013-02-05 10:23:08 UTC
Description of problem:
After updating to new kernel 3.7.5-201-fc18 a new start detects a wrong monitor Laptop 1280x1024(5:4). I do not have a laptop. I have a PC with a monitor.
The previous kernel 3.7.4-204-fc18 was detecting the right monitor BenQ19" 1440x900(16:10)
Because I use Grub, I can select and work with the right previous kernel.
A copy of the todays /var/log/yum.log is attached.
Many thanks in advance for a solution of the problem.

When you boot into 3.7.4, does it still detect the right resolution?

Can you post the dmesg output for both good and bad kernels?

Yes, when I boot kernel 3.7.4-204.fc18.i686.PAE I can work perfectly into the right resolution on the right monitor. So I have to take attention to keep the last good 204 kernels:
[gastonv@gastonv ~]$ yum list installed | grep kernel-PAE
kernel-PAE.i686 3.7.2-204.fc18 @updates
kernel-PAE.i686 3.7.4-204.fc18 @updates
kernel-PAE.i686 3.7.6-201.fc18 @updates
I have made both reboots and save into txt-files and the bad new kernel updates and installs which you can find as attachment. In the mean time, I also had new kernel updates of the -201.fc18.i686-PAE type, but unfortunately with the same bad result.
I also tried the not PAE kernel 201.fc18 version, also with the same bad result.
Many thanks for your answer and for watching my problem.

OK, so in the "bad" kernel case, it seems the nouveau driver either isn't being loaded, or isn't binding so you're left with VESA.

Ben?

Nouveau's not even mentioned in the logs.. Has it been blacklisted or something?

Hello Ben, please, is that a question to me or to Josh?
I have booted the 'bad' kernel and made a txt-file from dmesg.
After that, I made a reboot with the previous 'good' kernel and made a txt-file of the new dmesg.
Thanks, Gaston.

Hello Josh and Ben,
This morning, I updated a new kernel-PAE-3.7.8-202.fc18, but I regret to say, with the same bad result. I have put a new dmesg report dmesgbad-3.7.8-202.txt
A good thing that I still have 2 good kernels in my Grub, so I always can start a good one. I have to take good attention that, by upgrading, I do not lose them.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Gaston.

Hello Josh and Ben,
Sorry, just now, I see that the title of this Bug 907801 was wrong.
I changed into the good one:
Bug 907801 - New kernel 3.7.5-201-fc18 detects wrong monitor screen
Please, sorry for that mistake.
In the different texts, the interpretation was correct.
I am sill using the good one kernel-PAE.i686 3.7.4-204.fc18
Again sorry.
Kind regards,
Gaston.

Hello,
This morning I had a new update to
Feb 27 07:59:19 Installed: kernel-PAE-3.7.9-205.fc18.i686
Feb 27 07:58:39 Updated: kernel-headers-3.7.9-205.fc18.i686
But, and sorry I have to say it, with the same error that my monitor is not detected.
Kind regards,
Gaston.

Comment 16 Gaston Verhulst 2013-03-11 07:30:43 UTC
Hello,
Now, I had an new kernel update.
First I had manually erased the last bad one:
Mar 11 07:44:13 Erased: kernel-PAE-3.8.1-201.fc18.i686
And from a new yum update I got:
Mar 11 07:46:55 Updated: kernel-headers-3.8.2-206.fc18.i686
Mar 11 07:47:16 Installed: kernel-PAE-3.8.2-206.fc18.i686

After a reboot, the right BenQ 19" monitor was detected.
And in dmesg the nouveau video driver nouveau was showed again.
[gastonv@gastonv ~]$ uname -a
Linux gastonv 3.8.2-206.fc18.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Mar 8 15:15:17 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Very happy that from now, I can start again trouble-free.
Many thanks to all to fix that problem.
Kind regards,
Gaston Verhulst.
