The laptop runs as expected for hours or even days - very quiet and absolutely cool case. Suddenly, mostly during web surfing, the fan is touring up and the case starts to get really hot. After some minutes, the CPU starts to throttle - the laptop becames unusably slow. top does not show any processes generatring CPU load, powertop doesn't give any hint as well. Closing all running programs down to the empty Gnome desktop does not change the situation - the laptop continues to glow. A reboot fixes the problem. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.use the laptop for several hours 2.listen to the fan 3. Expected Results: stable operation for days I exepect the bug might result in hardware damage or even home fires due to the extreme heat generated (especially in unattended situations).

Problem reoccured. I stripped down the system to single user mode - only systemd and shell plus some dozens of kernel threads were running. Load displayed by to: about 0. CPU Temperature rising fast, I rebooted at 80°C/176°F to prevent hardware damage.
Kernel 3.8.1 and kernel 3.8.2 changed the behavior a bit: now, a S3 suspend/resume is enough to stop the overheating. In contrast, 3.7.9 needs a full reboot for that.
Are you still seeing this with the 3.9 or newer kernels?
