I have no idea what did this - I was not aware /usr/sbin/prelink was executing. Had powered on computer ~ 1 hour earlier, was listening to clementine (ver 1.1.1) in the background while reading web pages in firefox (ver 20.0). This problem started a few weeks ago after a system update, and then for the last week or so it had stopped (presumabley after updates).
