I was using compiz with emerald
then tried the fire and water effects together whilst rotating the desktop cube

You have a lot of plugins running at the same time, also the useless (imo) gears plugin.

Can you disable gears, fire and water plugins for cube rotating, and enable them step by step to see what plugin this issue caused.
