Description James Ralston 2013-03-19 23:57:07 UTC
Description of problem:

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with an nVidia Quadro NVS 4200M display in it. This card has had issues in the past (see bug 543091). Up until Fedora 18, I've been running GNOME in "fallback mode" with no issues, but fallback mode appears to be massively broken in Fedora 18 (SIGABRTs all over the place), so I'm trying to use the GNOME Shell.

Unfortunately, the 3D operations that GNOME Shell uses will cause the following error to appear within minutes of using it:

[ 815.477933] nouveau ![ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] unhandled status 0x00800000
[ 840.523017] nouveau E[ DRM] GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon

I can't say for certain whether previous Fedora releases had this problem, as I've been of the opinion that GNOME Shell and everything associated with it should die in a fire, and thus have stayed with fallback mode until Fedora 18.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

0:kernel-3.8.3-201.fc18.x86_64
1:xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.6-1.fc18.x86_64

Comment 1 James Ralston 2013-03-19 23:58:11 UTC
Oh, and just to be clear, once the "GPU lockup" message appears, the system is essentially toast. I can switch to a different pty, or ssh in remotely, but not much else until I reboot.

I have the same problem here on a system with a NVIDIA GT640 GPU.

kernel 3.11.4-201.fc19.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau 1.0.9-1.fc19.x86_64

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2013-12-21 12:18:35 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 18 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 18. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '18'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be
able to fix it before Fedora 18 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 8 Andrew M. Shooman 2013-12-31 18:48:25 UTC
Same problem:

Machine: Dell Latitude E6420
Kernel: kernel-3.12.5-302.fc20.x86_64

Video: NVIDIA GF119M [NVS 4200M] [NVD9]
Driver: xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.9-2.fc20.x86_64

Problem first appeared when upgrading from Fedora 17 to Fedora 19 and continues in Fedora 20. Machine is very unstable. Freezes frequently, especially when changing windows, and needs rebooting to recover.

If you need any more details from my machine to help with debugging, please let me know. Thanks.

Comment 9 maztaim 2014-01-03 14:27:24 UTC
I wish I could add more details, but my logs look essentially the same.

Machine: Lenovo T420
Kernels affected: kernel-3.12.5-302.fc20.x86_64, kernel-3.12.6-300.fc20.x86_64

Video:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 21d0
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
	Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
	Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=32M]

	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: nouveau

Driver: xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.9-2.fc20.x86_64

I do not have this problem on kernel-3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64.

Comment 10 maztaim 2014-01-25 01:04:46 UTC
kernel-3.12.8-300.fc20.x86_64 also affected.

Comment 11 maztaim 2014-01-30 04:21:44 UTC
It looks like upstream bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69488 is related. It is fixed in 3.13.x

Comment 12 maztaim 2014-02-04 02:42:42 UTC
kernel-3.12.9-301.fc20.x86_64 also affected.

Comment 13 maztaim 2014-02-12 02:42:41 UTC
kernel-3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64 lasted about 30 seconds longer than the rest. Still a problem.

Comment 14 maztaim 2014-02-12 02:54:24 UTC
Sorry. Sorry. Comment 13 has the wrong version.

kernel-3.12.10-300.fc20.x86_64 is a problem.
kernel-3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64 is the last known working version for me.

Comment 15 Andrew M. Shooman 2014-02-18 19:03:24 UTC
Despite the expectations of Comment 11, kernel-3.13.3-201.fc20.x86_64 has the same problem on my laptop computer, Dell Latitude E6420. (See Comment 8).

Comment 16 maztaim 2014-02-18 19:55:12 UTC
kernel-3.13.3-201.fc20.x86_64 is at least a bit more stable for me. I have been able to log in and use cinnamon without a problem for at least 10 minutes so far. I figure I'll give it a good go for the rest of the day.

Comment 17 maztaim 2014-02-19 01:23:01 UTC
No problems for 5 hours regular use. Several reboots and suspends. Nothing out of the ordinary that I can find in logs.

Comment 18 Andrew M. Shooman 2014-02-27 16:13:10 UTC
kernel-3.13.4-200.fc20.x86_64 seems to be stable on my machine, Dell Latitude E6420. I tried changing windows rapidly and violently and could not crash the video driver.

However, the previous kernel-3.13.3-201.fc20.x86_64 still had these problems on my machine.

Comment 19 Andrew M. Shooman 2014-02-27 16:34:42 UTC
I spoke too soon.
kernel-3.13.4-200.fc20.x86_64 just froze on my machine, same as with other kernels mentioned in this bug report.

Comment 21 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 11:49:13 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
