Description of problem: I logged in. And then the stupid "Oh no! Something has gone wrong."-page showed up. I had upgraded some packages just before. Below is a snipped of my yum.log file. The relevant update should be the ones done on 21. march. The older was done yesterday, while I was logged in. Found out that dmesg contained a line saying: [ 42.478934] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -12! This is probably the same bug as registered here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28106 I had just upgraded my bios on my Dell Optiplex 980 to A13 from A10. When I downgraded to A10 again, everything is stable again. PS: Attatches the whole dmesg to this bugrepport.

I am having the same bug with exactly same symptoms (very similar backtrace and such), but this is on desktop pc without wifi and with intel audio disabled. The video card is Radeon 4870x2, so most theories from fd.o bugreport seem unrelated. These gnome-shell crashes started after Mesa 9.1 update and happen very frequently, every few hours of work, sometimes more often. Some desktop application tend to cause crash pretty fast while others make it last. This is kind of unrelated, but it looks like people are experiencing similar thing in KDE: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316949
Superstition: seems to happen all too often when I start up anything graphically challenging or create a new window. Most often when starting up Firefox (I have a lot of windows and tabs within). In Fedora 17, I had a lot of screen problems in kind of similar circumstances. I cannot easily find BZ references when my firefox crashes the desktop, but do see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49981 BTW, the error message I get is painfully uninformative: Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution. [Log Out] backtrace_rating: 4 cmdline: /usr/bin/gnome-shell crash_function: memset executable: /usr/bin/gnome-shell kernel: 3.8.4-202.fc18.x86_64 package: gnome-shell-3.6.3.1-1.fc18 reason: Process /usr/bin/gnome-shell was killed by signal 7 (SIGBUS) uid: 1104 ureports_counter: 4
I switched from Gnome Shell to Cinnamon so avoid this bug. And still hit it. See bz 926036. So I switched to KDE, and that worked for a bit, but then hit this bug again. And KDE's bug reporter had seen it a few times too, so it told me to not waste developers time with an additional report. The pointed at an upstream bug. The most useful KDE bug report (of several) seems to be https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315089 That in turn points to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61182
Opened a new evolution reply window in second screen, went to type something in a to field. GNOME shell crashed. Feels like an ATI driver/X issue. backtrace_rating: 4 cmdline: /usr/bin/gnome-shell crash_function: memset executable: /usr/bin/gnome-shell kernel: 3.8.8-202.fc18.x86_64 package: gnome-shell-3.6.3.1-1.fc18 reason: Process /usr/bin/gnome-shell was killed by signal 7 (SIGBUS) runlevel: N 5 uid: 1000 ureports_counter: 1 xsession_errors:
See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61182 comment 45 for a patch that is aimed at fixing cogl. I think that there is also a driver bug but this patch should prevent that bug being tickled. In the same bz, there is mention of a patch with a similar purpose for kwin. See comments 43-47.
Hitting the full-screen button on a youtube video being played in a chrome web-browser. Switching videos - both flash and html5 - into full-screen mode often triggers this issue. backtrace_rating: 4 cmdline: /usr/bin/gnome-shell crash_function: memset executable: /usr/bin/gnome-shell kernel: 3.8.8-203.fc18.x86_64 package: gnome-shell-3.6.3.1-1.fc18 reason: Process /usr/bin/gnome-shell was killed by signal 7 (SIGBUS) uid: 1000 ureports_counter: 1 xsession_errors: (gnome-shell-calendar-server:2282): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: Error releasing name org.gnome.Shell.CalendarServer: The connection is closed
bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61182 has been declared fixed. Can we get the patch into F18? (I admit that I don't know mesa version numbers. F18 seems to be using 6.5.1 (If I read the package names correctly) and the fix is for 9.1.)
Oops: I performed my "rpm -q" on a CentOS 5 box. F18's mesa seems to be 9.1.
I have two external monitor connected, so this issue appear when I connected (or turn on), one external monitor. Video card: AMD Firepro M5950 Dell M4600
if any f18 person wants to test the cogl patch, I put up patched rpms at ftp://ftp.nohats.ca/cogl/ my laptop crashes rarely (when plugging/removing external monitor) so I cannot really tell if this fixes it.
(In reply to Paul Wouters from comment #23) > if any f18 person wants to test the cogl patch, I put up patched rpms at > ftp://ftp.nohats.ca/cogl/ This version of cogl resolves the issues I was experiencing with Gnome Shell crashing when using multiple monitors. Thanks!

cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18 has been submitted as an update for Fedora 18. https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18
Package cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18: * should fix your issue, * was pushed to the Fedora 18 testing repository, * should be available at your local mirror within two days. Update it with: # su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18' as soon as you are able to. Please go to the following url: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2013-9635/cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18 then log in and leave karma (feedback).
I didn't have the problem with multiple monitors but sometimes when switching between linux-screens or when opening youtube in fullscreen (sometimes). I have taken the patch on May24th from Paul Wouters and since then had no severe issues. (Before approx. once every 2 days). So I'm optimistic, but I'll wait some more days to be really sure. I think I have one issue though: Sometimes on switching linux-screens or when opening youtube in fullscreen the graphical system doesn't react for some seconds. Before this patch first it didn't react and then it crashed as this bugreport states. Now it just doesn't react and then after some seconds everything is normal ... Could this be related?
I can confirm that this fixes my problem with two external monitors. Thank you!
cogl-1.12.2-2.fc18 has been pushed to the Fedora 18 stable repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report.
My system has been very much more stable since Paul patched cogl (#25). But I just had another crash which seems related. - Fedora 19 x86-64 with all updates as of about a week ago - radeon video card - I got a logged out because X crashed - ABRT sees nothing to report - Xorg.0.log.old shows that the /usr/bin/Xorg crashed with a bus error (signal 7) xorg-x11-drv-ati-7.1.0-5.20130408git6e74aacc5.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-4.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-common-1.14.2-4.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-font-utils-7.5-17.fc19.x86_64
