Description KitchM 2013-03-29 19:26:27 UTC
Description of problem:The installed sound card is the Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128 (CT4750) with the Creative Labs chip CT5880 DCQ. The onboard sound has been disabled and is so shown in PulseAudio Volume Control.

The alsamixer shows "HD Audio Generic", although another card is listed as a choice; Ensoniq AudioPCI. But even after selecting that one, which has at least worked, and after saving the setup with "alsactl store", the card selection will not take and I am left with no sound.

According to the ALSA Matrix of cards, I believe I should be using the emu10k1 module, but I'm not sure. (The table is skewed.)

Comment 2 Jaroslav Kysela 2013-04-02 10:17:35 UTC
The first card is the HDMI audio device. If you like to reorder your cards, put this configuration to a file named /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-reorder.conf (for example):

options snd-ens1371 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1

Comment 3 KitchM 2013-04-02 16:09:55 UTC
No, my bug report was not about order, it lists the wrong card.

Comment 4 Jaroslav Kysela 2013-04-02 16:29:04 UTC
You have tree different audio hardware in your system:

1) Ensoniq PCI (the snd-ens1371 module/driver is correct)
2) Integrated analog (HDA compatible, probably)
3) HDMI HDA output (graphics card)

In BIOS, you disabled only the analog HDA soundcard. Others are available.

If PulseAudio does not save your preferred soundcard configuration, open a pulseaudio bug or reassing this bug to the pulseaudio package.

Comment 5 KitchM 2013-04-02 17:47:36 UTC
I actually have:
motherboard built-in sound (diabled in BIOS):
Realtek ALC850 6-channel CODEC that has 6-channel audio ports and a coaxial S/PDIF out port and supports Universal Audio Jack and Audio Sensing and Enumeration technologies.

PCI card slot:
Sound Blaster model # CT4750 with a Creative chip CT5880

There are no other hardware sound devices.

Please explain your ideas about the mismatched naming.

Thank you

Comment 6 Jaroslav Kysela 2013-04-02 17:53:35 UTC
HDMI HDA = sound card taking care about audio through the HDMI connection to your monitor. HDMI carries also audio data and the current implementation behaves like another soundcard in your system. So yes, your graphics card creates one extra soundcard.

Comment 7 KitchM 2013-04-02 18:09:27 UTC
So then, to put it simply, the HDMI channel (which is created by some unknown hardware) sends sound thru the video card's HDMI channel, should that be enabled and used. I could not get that to work, so I just use a stereo audio cable to the monitor's audio-in jack.

In any case, I understand why that might be construed as another sound device. But then it should be labeled as such in device listings. It is not, and that is misleading.

Further, the user wants to see a clear match to what they know they have in their system. Anything else is wrong, and only serves to confuse issues of every sort.

Is there some reason that Fedora cannot get this right?

Thanks.

Comment 8 KitchM 2013-04-28 16:22:40 UTC
Does anyone know why my primary sound card is not properly identified?

Comment 9 Raymond 2013-04-30 01:48:22 UTC
CT5880 is not emu10k1

Comment 10 KitchM 2013-04-30 15:23:50 UTC
Which is for the CT5880?

you need to study pulseaudio udev-detect to find out how pulseaudio select default device after you disable onboard audio

Comment 12 Raymond 2013-05-01 02:03:14 UTC
did your graphic card have HDMI ?

Comment 13 KitchM 2013-05-01 12:32:55 UTC
Yes, the graphics card does, or so it says. However, there is no sound from that source thru HDMI, as I noted earlier. So that does not work correctly.

I'm just a person who uses, tests and reports back on the software on my system. I do not study any software funcitonality, nor would I understand what, where or how. I believe you need to check with the software designers to understand that.

Thanks.

Comment 14 Raymond 2013-05-02 00:49:21 UTC
you have to file abut in pulseaudio because ens1371 does not support Jack detection but HDMI and HDA support Jack detection

pulseaudio swtich to available to HDMI

Comment 15 KitchM 2013-05-02 00:55:01 UTC
Sorry, but I don't understand. What do I have to file? What is this about Jack detection?

Thanks.

pulseaudio use Jack detection and your HDMI not present

ande your onboard ich AC97 controller (alc850 AC97 coded) and end1371 does not support Jack detection

you have to shutdown pulseaudio and restart pulseaudio to get the verbose log

state.Generic {
	control.1 {
		iface CARD
		name 'HDMI/DP,pcm=3 Jack'
		value false
		comment {
			access read
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}

Comment 21 KitchM 2013-06-27 21:55:20 UTC
How can I get that?

Comment 22 Raymond 2013-06-28 07:54:20 UTC
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_PulseAudio_problems

you have to disable autospwan to get the log

and enable autospwan after you get the log

should be Creative Labs CT4750 PCI 128 Sound Blaster Audio Card

I couldn't find the name in the file. Did you mean it was composed "by" the file you linked?

Your other link showed that it was obviously selecting the wrong one, which has been my whole point from the beginning.

Comment 28 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 05:55:30 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Shows the wrong card and manufacturer.

http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1274/5880

you have to discuss/update the description of

http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1274/5880/12748001

and wait until package hwdata use the updated pci.ids

Comment 31 KitchM 2013-07-05 16:31:55 UTC
Thank you. I have posted a comment there in the discussion regarding that product.

Comment 32 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 17:13:56 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
