Event details suggestion - context menu

Comment 4 Einav Cohen 2013-05-16 19:35:41 UTC
Simon: right click with "copy to clipboard" option we will be able to provide only via the built-in browser right-click menu (clipboard-access is problematic and non-standard across browsers).

I agree that the comprehensive solution should include the ability to copy-paste the text (even if it is only via the standard browser right-click dialog), and it is indeed not referred to / mentioned in the suggestion slide deck.

Malini:
In order to address Simon's concern (and also Itamar's concern which he brought up a while ago): in addition to fully-display the Event details, we are also expected to be able to copy-paste the Event details, and it is not mentioned in your suggestion.

As I mentioned: Copy-paste will be allowed at this point only from the built-in browser right-click menu. So I suspect that the Events grid will end up having two possible right-click menus (see attachment 749025 [details]):

(1) built-in browser right-click menu - which will be displayed when right-clicking on the Event details section

(2) the Events grid right-click menu: IIRC, currently this menu contains only the "details" item, which opens an Event Details pop-up (this was the short-term solution to the original problem, see bug 872274), however we expect the context-menu to contain other items once we will address bug 953989, for example.

Having two different possible context menus from the same GUI component is probably not such a good idea; any thoughts about that? how do you think should we address this issue?

Einav,

Yes, having two different right click menus depending on whether a row is expanded or collapsed is not a good idea. I think if we have a small gear icon with a drop down to indicate some actions are available for the expanded message, we give a visual affordance for these actions without always exposing them as buttons. See attachment. Let me know if that works.

Actions available for expanded message

Are these options needed for non-expandable messages as well?

Hi Einav/Malini,

So are we looking at any specific version for the availability of this feature?
(tentatively)

unfortunately no; we have provided a way for copying the full Event message in the context of bug 872274 (see attachment 926852 [details]); the solution proposed in attachment 785859 [details] requires a lot of infrastructural work that we cannot afford doing to any concrete version ATM.
we will keep it in mind though for the 4.0 GUI overhaul.

Now in 4.2, you can open either the Events menu (left nav) or Events popover (top nav) and use regular browser copy paste.

Since there doesn't seem to be a need for this anymore, closing.
