Description Braden McDaniel 2013-04-24 13:34:48 UTC
Description of problem:
I'm unable to print to my network printer since upgrading to Fedora 18.

Upon adding a printer in System Settings, System Settings always crashes (bug 886512); however, the printer does appear to have been added. But, I am unable to print a test page and attempting to print from applications does not work.

The printer in question is a Lexmark E230n.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
3.6.3-1.fc18

How reproducible:
Consistently.

Comment 1 Marek Kašík 2013-04-24 13:39:56 UTC
Hi Braden,

does the Printers panel show correct model for the printer?
What does "lpstat -l" returns?

Marek

Comment 2 Braden McDaniel 2013-04-24 15:58:13 UTC
Yes, the correct model is shown in the Printers panel once the printer is added.

"lpstat -l" doesn't show anything:

$ lpstat -l
$ echo $?
0

Hi,

I'm sorry, it should be "lpstat -t".

Marek

Comment 5 Rolle 2013-06-19 09:17:17 UTC
The same problem here. I think it isn't a problem from the driver. It seems it is a problem from cups/network/firewall/routing/...
It doesn't print the testpage. It seems the printing data doesn't arrive the printer. From Windows (XP and 7) I can print to these network printers.

Here is my scenario 1:
----------------------
Fedora 19 prerelease
Laserprinter Brother HL-4050CDN is connected via lan on a fileserver PC. The fileserver PC (Windows 2003 Server) is accessable via lan in an own subnet.
Driver is installed, but the testpage isn't printing:

lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: Brother
device for Brother: smb://eukalypt/Brother
Brother accepting requests since Mi 19 Jun 2013 10:16:43 CEST
printer Brother is idle. enabled since Mi 19 Jun 2013 10:16:43 CEST
	Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)

Scenario 2:
-----------
Fedora 19 prerelease
Laserprinter Brother HL-4050CDN is connected via lan on a fileserver PC. The fileserver PC (Windows 2003 Server) is accessable via lan in an own subnet.
Driver is installed, but the testpage isn't printing:

lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: Samsung
device for Samsung: smb://eukalypt/Samsung
Samsung accepting requests since Mi 19 Jun 2013 10:31:07 CEST
printer Samsung is idle. enabled since Mi 19 Jun 2013 10:31:07 CEST
	Printing page 1, 6%
Samsung-7 rolle 1024 Mi 19 Jun 2013 10:31:06 CEST

Comment 6 Rolle 2013-06-19 09:44:29 UTC
Additional info to comment 5:

Scenario 2:
The printer is not the "Brother HL-4050CDN". It is a "Samsung ML-7000".

Comment 7 Rolle 2013-07-18 09:49:54 UTC
This seems a bug in the Gnome-Printer-Settings. As reported in Comment 5 and 6 I used the Gnome 3.8 printer configuration tool.
When I use the "system-config-printers"-tool all worked fine. I can seeminglyless add new printer (also samba network printers) and then all the installed printers work fine (testpage and printing from applications).
So the faulty handling with network printers seems the Gnome 3.8 Printer Configuration tool.

Comment 8 Braden McDaniel 2013-09-04 19:48:25 UTC
Still a problem in Fedora 19.

Comment 9 Rene Kraneveld 2013-09-13 08:57:51 UTC
Same problem with HP Color LaserJet 2600 network printer under Fedora 18 and 19(xfce). Netrwork printer works fine under Fedora 17 and Windows 7.
Can add printer but printing testpage fails.

A duplicate(?) of this: bug 1032097

Comment 11 Fedora End Of Life 2015-01-09 17:57:20 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will
be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 12 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-06 21:36:38 UTC
In Fedora 21 KDE I do have a similar problem:

[root@fedora01 ~]# lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: Lexmark-C543
device for Lexmark-C543: usb://Lexmark/C543?serial=9468CMF
Lexmark-C543 accepting requests since Fri 06 Feb 2015 06:07:34 PM CET
printer Lexmark-C543 is idle. enabled since Fri 06 Feb 2015 06:07:34 PM CET
[root@fedora01 ~]# uname -a
Linux fedora01.grootaers-nl.com 3.18.5-201.fc21.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 2 21:00:58 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

System is in the latest version and up to date on updates.

Problem occured after upgrade from 19 to 20, but as I do not use the printer much it gave me no urgent problem until now.

Comment 13 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-10 07:17:48 UTC
I can have created a confusion, but I normally use the printer as a networkprinter.

For testing reasons I have connected it with an USB-cable, to see if that corrected the problem.

If you guessed it did not, you are correct; hence the previous (comment 12) comment.

HIH and good luck in hunting down the error(s)!

Comment 14 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-13 23:12:05 UTC
Looks like if there is a problem with laser-printers and CUPS; all mentioned printers are laser-printers, possible all color-printers. Maybe a small pointer?

Comment 15 Fedora End Of Life 2015-02-17 15:03:05 UTC
Fedora 19 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-01-06. Fedora 19 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 16 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-17 15:58:52 UTC
I am currently running Fedora 21.

So this problem is still a valid one, because I do _not_ have the necessary skills to hunt this down and find and/or fix this problem.

I doe not print a lot, but I think that printing should be possible, as it was possible to do so before fedora 19, if I recall correctly when it first occurred.

Strange error by the way, can it be related to the fact that I use A4-paper as default paper-size in the driver and on the printer in stead of the USA common letter-size???

Comment 17 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-20 19:07:28 UTC
I did install cockpit on my desktop-server-use for everything and nothing...

I got four messages about /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, dealing with some errors:

Unknown directive SubscriptionPrivateValues on line 88 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
Unknown directive SubscriptionPrivateAccess on line 87 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
Unknown directive JobPrivateValues on line 86 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
Unknown directive JobPrivateAccess on line 85 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.

After doing some searching on the Web - now google was my friend - revealed that those lines should be contained in a <Profile ><\Profile> pair, but those lines were missing. Commenting those out (# as the first character of the line) and restarting cups resolved this problem.

The original file was from the RPM, because I do _not_ have the expertise to deal with that.

Please test my solution, and we can close this (hopefully) for ever.

Comment 18 Rene Kraneveld 2015-02-22 12:26:49 UTC
[SOLVED]
Hermans suggestion did not solve the printing problem.
I installed my HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer with system-config-printer but that is not the right way.Install looks o.k. but print of test page fails. For the HP one should install hplip and hplip-gui and than install the printer with hp-tools. That wil start the hp Device Manager and that shows that you need to install a required plugin. (hp Device mamanger can be started from desktop applications menu also)(I use xfce).
After that my hp 2600n network printer worked flawless.

Comment 19 Herman Grootaers 2015-02-26 12:26:52 UTC
I found another thing which can cause some trouble:

If a print fails it can show up in print-queue with an cryptic message filter failed, no reason given.

I noticed that when you print with an incorrect setting of the printer, for me default A4 portrait, and a print of letter & portrait or A4 & landscape you will get those messages shown in the print-queue and either an online print in decoded hex of the text to be printed, or nothing happens at all.

For this moment printing a PDF; a textdocument in Kate, and a document in LiberOffice Writer is correct, and that is all I need - that is for now.

Later on I may need some more printing from other programs, but this not my priority at the moment.

There can be any issues. Sometimes During rainy season paper become thicker that's why some time paper gets stuck. You can https://babasupport.org/printer/lexmark-customer-service/86 and get solutions for your questions.
