Description Anthony Name 2013-05-04 19:27:58 UTC
Description of problem:
The build of custom kernel documentation is wrong at section titled:-

"Configure Kernel Options"

Specifically subsection:-

"1. Change to the kernel source tree directory:

cd ~/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-$ver.$subver.$fedver/linux-$ver.$arch/"

Is wrong in that it refers to a $subver option that will NOT have been created if using the instructions immediately prior and above on that page. This section is the first time the $subver variable has actually been used (it is defined a few sections earlier but not used). As a result it's not then clear which is the correct build directory. ($ver.$fedver or $ver.$fedver.new).

I realise this is a bit anal but for someone trying to learn about building custom kernels such as myself I don't then want to guess and get it wrong.

This has been hanging around a while, sorry about that. The wiki is editable by any Fedora contributor, not really a "websites" property, so this wasn't the best place to get attention for a wiki page.

That said, do you have a suggestion for improvement? I can work with you if you do, but to me it seems like straightforward variable interpolation, and any confusion due to unfamiliarity with the process.. well, it goes away once you're a little more familiar. It can be tempting to add a lot of reinforcing explanatory text, but it usually ends up just being distracting.
