Description of problem: The latest kernel supports KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) in virtual machines, but it's setting a very large resolution -- 1280x1024 -- and the display doesn't fit on my physical monitor -- 1680x1050 -- when you account for the title bar and menu bar and tool bar on the virt-viewer window. I either have to scale the display (which looks ugly) or scroll around a lot. This was particularly problematic yesterday when testing the Anaconda text mode for the Fedora 19 Test Days. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2013-05-21_AnacondaNewUI_Followup I found a workaround by adding drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1024x768.bin to the kernel command line options to force 1024x768, but it would be nice if this happened automatically, or if there was a way to select the virtual screen size in the machine settings. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): libvirt-1.0.5.1-1.fc19.x86_64 qemu-kvm-1.4.1-3.fc19.x86_64 virt-manager-0.10.0-0.4.gitb68faac8.fc19.noarch kernel-3.9.3-301.fc19.x86_64 How reproducible: every time Steps to Reproduce: 1. install Fedora 19 to a virtual machine in text mode Actual results: virtual screen is set to 1280x1024 which doesn't fit (or just barely fits) on most monitors with a height of 1050 or 1080, and certainly doesn't fit on smaller screens Expected results: start with a lower resolution, or allow a way to easily select a resolution for the virtual machine Additional info:
It appears to only be a problem with VNC. I switched to Spice and it chose a more sane resolution.
This is a dupe of another bug. Summary is that while the issue persists in F18, it's unlikely to be fixed there given pending end-of-life. F19 however doesn't have this problem for me if the guest is fully up to date, regardless of cirrus vs. qxl or vnc vs spice *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 928225 ***
