Description of problem: gnome-boxes functionality is not one-of-many, but it is one-of-a-kind, there are no real alternatives with looser integration with any DE or with no DE integration at all. Gnome-boxes is therefore potentially useful outside of GNOME as well so there is no reason to exclude it from menus/launchers/... of other DE's. It makes actually harm to gnome-boxes as it makes user base artificialy smaller. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-boxes-3.8.3-1.fc19.x86_64 How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. look up 'boxes' in KDE menu 2. 3. Actual results: Boxes are not included Expected results: Boxes should be shown in the menu. Additional info:

Or it does the opposite: By enabling awesome features only available in GNOME, its one of the reasons people will want to use GNOME. Supporting other DEs/OSs always comes with some maintenance/development burdon[1] and since Boxes is specifically meant for GNOME, I don't think its worth the trouble for me at least. Since the bug is assigned to Christophe, I'll leave the fate to him but its a WONTFIX from me. [1] We'll be dealing with bugs like these then: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=963324
(In reply to Zeeshan Ali from comment #1) > Since the bug is assigned to Christophe I'm just the default assignee for Boxes bugs in fedora (I guess I'm the package maintainer), as far as I'm concerned, this bug could be assigned to some non-existing magical boxes-maint alias. This particular bug would need to be fixed upstream first anyway.

I don't think that removing the OnlyShowIn implies that you have to provide the same level of support for non-GNOME DE, nor does it say you have to fix all bugs that occur there. There's really no strong technical reason why Boxes should not be able to work in non-GNOME DE, users just won't have quite the same level of attractive integration. IMHO the OnlyShowIn=GNOME is just a gratuitously breaking things for non-GNOME users for no real good reason. Let them use it and if they find bugs let other motivated people provide patches for them. It only becomes a maintenance burden if you need to start having fully separate code paths for features under GNOME vs non-GNOME.

But I'll have to look into bugs and that consumes time, even if I in the end decide not to fix them. If I'm not supporting non-GNOME DEs/OSs anyways, IMO its better to give a clear message: You are on your own if you want to use this outside GNOME. I don't see any better way to communicate this other than not showing Boxes in other DE's menus. Also, I really hate keeping bugs open forever. Such bugs will typically endup forgotten cause there is always better things to do. > There's really no strong technical reason why > Boxes should not be able to work in non-GNOME DE, users just won't have > quite the same level of attractive integration. And that will give bad/wrong impression of Boxes. I rather prefer they don't use it at all.
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 19 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-01-06. Fedora 19 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
