Description of problem: Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 19 kernel-3.9.9-301.fc19.x86_64 How reproducible: Every time Steps to Reproduce: 1. Power on the machine and select "Kernel 3.9.9-301" from grub2 menu 2. The startup will stop at "[OK] Reached target Graphical Interface." message and X window will not start. 3. I can switch to console login by pressing "Alt+F2~F6". Actual results: X window does not start Expected results: X window starts and shows the login screen of GDM Additional info: 1. If I choose "Kernel 3.9.8-300" from grub2 menu, everything will work. 2. I am using a Thinkpad T61.
After I reported this bug, the "Kernel 3.9.8-300" stopped working for me also. So this is not a problem of the kernel.
Happened to me after doing update 12 July. I have encrypted /home and after supplying the luks password, the system tries to start gdm but nothing happens. Switching to text console does not work. I can press the power button and that works i.e., system shuts down. Ctrl-alt-del does not work. Using different kernel or selecting rescue mode from grub menu does not fix things i.e., symptoms are the same. I am using Thinkpad w520

(In reply to Daniel from comment #8) what version of xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2 do you have installed ? with xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-4.fc19 doesn't crash ? could you attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log when X crash please
(In reply to Sergio Monteiro Basto from comment #9) Here is my xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2's version. $ rpm -q xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-4.fc19.x86_64 My problem is not that X crash. My problem is X do not start. When I switch to text console login, I can find that the /var/log/Xorg.0.log's modify date is not changed.
(In reply to Daniel from comment #10) > When I switch to text console login, I can find that the > /var/log/Xorg.0.log's modify date is not changed. doesn't not change since last reboot ? are you able to start X, with any command ? Sorry , I think I can't help you much and kdm logs have any message ?
Created attachment 777306 [details] boot.log (In reply to Sergio Monteiro Basto from comment #11) > doesn't not change since last reboot ? > are you able to start X, with any command ? > Sorry , I think I can't help you much and kdm logs have any message ? I have to switch to text console, login, and use command: # init 3 # init 5 to start X. I attach my boot.log here. The messages stop at [OK] Reached target Graphical Interface. and nothing happen more. X will not start if I do not type commands above.
(In reply to Daniel from comment #12) > I have to switch to text console, login, and use command: > # init 3 > # init 5 > to start X. So nothing wrong with x11-server ... > I attach my boot.log here. The messages stop at > [OK] Reached target Graphical Interface. > and nothing happen more. X will not start if I do not type commands above. this could be multiples things , but try see systemd says , with systemctl systemctl status display-manager systemctl status gdm cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target should have : [Unit] Description=Graphical Interface Documentation=man:systemd.special(7) Requires=multi-user.target After=multi-user.target Conflicts=rescue.target Wants=display-manager.service AllowIsolate=yes [Install] Alias=default.target
This issue is still seen in latest kernel 3.9.9-302.fc19.x86_64 and xorg package "xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-7.fc19.x86_64" Now it is appearing every time I try to boot. Thanks Ashish
Sorry small mistake in previous information; the below is the correct combination kernel and xorg server where I am seeing the problem. kernel-3.10.3-300.fc19.x86_64 "xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-7.fc19.x86_64" sorry for inconvenience. Thanks Ashish
Could you attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log when X not start ? or have you the same issue of comment #12 ? If X don't start at all, /var/log/Xorg.0.log , try reply the question of comment #13 please ...

Hi Basto, Sorry for delayed response. For my comment 14, 15; I upgraded to below kernel and this seems to be working now. 3.10.4-300.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-7.fc19.x86_64 Br Ashish
Hi Basto, In my previous I said it is working fine with above said combination kernel + xorg-x11-server but actually it is not working fine in the sense that sometime it works and sometime it do not work. Most of the time it works when I reboot once then in second attempt works. Today I updated with latest kernel and xorg-x11-server and rebooted the machie; situation is same i.e. "X window starts and shows the login screen of GDM" kernel-3.10.4-300.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.2-9.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-utils-7.7-1.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-common-1.14.2-9.fc19.x86_64 My Machine details: Dell XPS L502X Please find below the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" ======================/var/log/Xorg.0.log================ [ 5112.765] X.Org X Server 1.14.2 Release Date: 2013-06-25 [ 5112.765] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 5112.765] Build Operating System: 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.x86_64 [ 5112.765] Current Operating System: Linux localhost.localdomain 3.10.4-300.fc19.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jul 30 11:29:05 UTC 2013 x86_64 [ 5112.766] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.10.4-300.fc19.x86_64 root=/dev/mapper/luks-be850422-7d28-4e1e-a4ee-2cfa4dda8c3e ro rd.md=0 rd.lvm=0 rd.dm=0 rd.luks.uuid=luks-689c2139-60c6-478e-b16b-ce3a194dd9f9 vconsole.keymap=us rd.luks.uuid=luks-be850422-7d28-4e1e-a4ee-2cfa4dda8c3e rhgb quiet LANG=en_US.UTF-8 [ 5112.766] Build Date: 22 July 2013 04:33:06AM [ 5112.766] Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.14.2-7.fc19 [ 5112.766] Current version of pixman: 0.30.0 [ 5112.766] Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Hi, next time please attach Xorg.log not paste it "Jul 31 09:56:34 t61 gdm[1576]: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed." I don't know if it is a problem you have two graphics cards , one intel and other NOUVEAU , as said in previous comments this could be others things than xorg-x11-server.
Hi Basto, Sorry for inconvenience; I shall take to attach the logs in future. I have following two graphics card in my laptop. 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card + Intel GMA HD and below two drivers installed: xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.9-1.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.21.12-2.fc19.x86_64 Can you give some hint for fixing this problem. Br Ashish
Hi, I just check my computer , which have one integrated Intel and one Nvidia, but I just use Nvidia , and Intel doesn't appears in Xorg logs , so maybe, you can disable one of the cards on bios setup. Other hint, remove rhbg from kernel boot options, editing /etc/default/grub change this line to : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet" and run as root: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg more details on grub2 here : https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2
Hi, I have the same issue: Xorg is not starting at boot time. It used to work on F19 until some time ago (assuming after an Xorg update but not sure). Logging in on vt2 and starting X manually (startx) works. My configuration is as follows: kernel-3.11.1-200.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.14.3-1.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.21.12-2.fc19.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-common-1.14.3-1.fc19.x86_64 F19 is up to date as of today. I only have the integrated Intel graphics, no additional card. As per comment #13: /usr/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target is identical to the shown one # systemctl status kdm.service kdm.service - The KDE login manager Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service; enabled) Active: active (running) since So 2013-09-29 17:43:06 CEST; 51min ago Main PID: 775 (kdm) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/kdm.service └─775 /usr/bin/kdm vt1 Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: plymouth is NOT running Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: X server startup timeout, terminating Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled # systemctl status display-manager kdm.service - The KDE login manager Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service; enabled) Active: active (running) since So 2013-09-29 17:43:06 CEST; 51min ago Main PID: 775 (kdm) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/kdm.service └─775 /usr/bin/kdm vt1 Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: plymouth is NOT running Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: X server startup timeout, terminating Sep 29 17:43:36 neptun kdm[775]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled Additionally find attached kdm.log and Xorg.0.log. Any hint is appreciated, Sandro

Hi, we have a bug fixed or found recently ,with kdm , start starts before playmount , please switch to vt ctrl-alt-F2 enter as root and try systemctl restart kdm
Hi, Well, yes that works but it doesn't solve the initial issue. If you found the bug where can I find the fix (testing)? I'll try it to see if that fixes it and give feedback of course! Thanks, Sandro
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2013-17713/kde-workspace-4.11.1-3.fc19 please try it with : kde-workspace-4.11.1-3.fc19 The description is not exactly the same , I found this problem with kdm that starts before plymouth-quit, need to check it first .
It looks like I am already at your mentioned version: rpm -q kde-workspace kde-workspace-4.11.1-3.fc19.x86_64 It was installed yesterday (according to yum history info). So this did not solve the issue - at least not for me :(
Having same problems with my F19 system: Boot stops at "Reached target graphical interface". I found a workaround for this: By booting without the rhrgb option, the system reaches always the gdm login screen.
This only partially solved the issue: Now it works sometimes but sometimes still the same issue. Waiting patiently for a complete fix :)
By installing kernel-3.11.3-201.fc19.x86_64, my box even boots with rhgb (install now, i had no hangup)
I'm already on kernel-3.11.3-201.fc19.x86_64, 3 times booted one hangup (without rhgb). I will check the next boots but right now it seems not to finally solve the issue. Thanks anyway! I appreciate your tips!
OK this seems a plymouth problem , because we have reports with gdm and kdm I'm going change component to plymouth , and see what they do .
It's a likely plymouth problem. systemctl list-jobs reports no pending jobs. ps shows that plymouth is still running. systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait.service reports that it succeeded, yet the plymouth daemon is still running, and that prevents gdm from starting up. I see no workarounds except to disable plymouth completely, if I want my server to finish booting.
cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/plymouth-quit.service [Unit] Description=Terminate Plymouth Boot Screen After=rc-local.service plymouth-start.service systemd-user-sessions.service Before=graphical.target [Service] ExecStart=-/usr/bin/plymouth quit Type=oneshot TimeoutSec=20 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I'm testing add this : Before=graphical.target and after reload systemd with /bin/systemctl daemon-reload
So far, the server managed to finish booting on the first try, with that change to plymouth-quit.service
Possibly a duplicate of #967521 ?
The suggested change to plymouth-quit.service appears to fix this bug for me, this seems to be different than bug 967521. But I'm wondering whether the same change should also be made to plymouth-quit-wait.service, as well.
It looks like the last kernel-update did solve the issue for me. No more hangups since. Thanks, sandro
(In reply to Sergio Monteiro Basto from comment #35) > OK this seems a plymouth problem , because we have reports with gdm and kdm > I'm going change component to plymouth , and see what they do . I don't think so ... I'm experiencing the same on one machine, and I've just uninstalled Plymouth :-) from my analysis, I'd blame kdm, but if this is common also to gdm, it must be something else the suspicios line from the service logs includes: "X server startup timeout, terminating"[*] looking into Xorg.0.log, everything is fine, no sign of error then just eighty miliseconds(!) after everything being initialised it starts unloading modules then it says terminated successfully comparing the timestamps in logs, kdm service is started more than minute before X gets started - Xorg log starts at 71.280 and ends at 73.100, while kdm got started about 12 seconds after boot soo ... if kdm has built-in one minute timeout to start X, it expires before X startup even begins now the question is why there is such a long delay ... I'm seeing a lot of disk activity, at first I thought it is fsck, at second I suspected selinux relabelling, but these shouldn't happen on subsequent boots looking at systemd-analyze, it says 3 min 27.262s spent in usespace ... blame says 1min 561ms sm-client.service 1min 547ms sendmail.service 59.480s avahi-daemon.service 58.944s firewalld.service 4.518s colord.service 4.492s system.fsck.root.service ... sooo ... avahi/firewalld is here to blame? - I doubt that sendmail would be able to block X startup, it'd be probably the other way round, some networking issue causing sendmail and X not to work properly hm ... uninstalling firewalld does not help, but it causes NetworkManager to get on top - 1min 1.513s NetworkManager.service 1min 500ms sm-client.service ... and trying to uninstall avahi takes nearly the whole system :-( [*] I'd file a bug for kdm here, if it can't start X, it should terminate, not to stay active, pretending everything is fine and the service started corretcly, but I guess it is not worth it as we are switching to sddm ...?
hope that I haven't missed anything, but this one now seems to me a duplicate of bug #967521 - hope I'm not too hasty to close this as such :-) p.s. if (re)moving /var/log/journal does not work for you as a "fix", be sure to mention it in a way that gets attention *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 967521 ***
