Description James Patterson 2015-04-24 06:36:52 UTC
Description of problem:
Gnome keeps telling me I have updates to install. To see if this was true (I have dnf-automatic installed) I clicked "restart & install". Unfortunately it was true: which means that dnf-automatic and gnome aren't aware of each other.

Can we have a fix which is quicker than "in some nebulous future there will be a library"?

Comment 6 Radek Holy 2015-09-08 10:16:02 UTC
There is nothing to "fix". There is no bug. Gnome Software downloads the metadata on its own a DNF does that as well. Until you somehow *integrate* these two programs, there is no way how to solve that. Integration always means a cooperation between the two teams and that always takes some time to carefully plan things.

Comment 7 Tim Niemueller 2015-09-08 10:57:31 UTC
Well, it's a regression from the yum time.

With this information it is even worse, as bandwidth and storage space is wasted downloading metadata twice. I see two short-term solutions:
1. the meta data stores are combined (I assume that even the Gnome system uses dnf as its backend?). A simple lock to avoid concurrent access and we're set.
2. If that seems like too much work, at least trigger a dnf metadata update once gnome-software finds an update. Maybe that could be as simple as copying the metadata?

As a workaround, is it enough to set the /org/gnome/software/download-updates dconf value to false to disable gnome-software from downloading metadata? I wouldn't use it anyway with requiring restarts for every little update.
