office seg faults when starting

Always (on one machine).

[Splash screen shows for a short while]

Does it help if you remove ~/.openoffice.org/3/user/extensions ?

Yep.  That "fixes" the crash (but I don't know just what functionality I've removed, if anything).

None at all. That dir contains only autogenerated data. It will just be recreated on the next start.
