What do these commands say?: rpm -q cups systemctl status cups.service See also bug #731421. Hi Tim, here's what I got from those commands: [root@Hogar ~]# rpm -q cups cups-1.5.0-9.fc16.x86_64 [root@Hogar ~]# systemctl status cups.service cups.service - CUPS Printing Service Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; disabled) Active: inactive (dead) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/cups.service [root@Hogar ~]# Bug #731421 certainly looks similar, but I'm using a later version of cups and the issue seems to persist. Just let me know if you need further info. See bug #731421 comment #11 in particular. Have you ever had a version of cups installed on that system without bug #731421 fixed? e.g. did you install the Alpha and then update, or did you install from a newer beta candidate? This is a brand new installation using Beta RC2. However, I saw this same issue when I installed F16 Alpha a while back in this machine. I was later forced to install Beta RC2 from scratch, not an upgrade or update. What does 'yum history pkg-list cups' say? Here is:
[root@Hogar ~]# yum history pkg-list cups
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
ID | Action(s) | Package
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 | Updated | cups-1:1.5.0-1.fc16.x86_64
14 | Update | 1:1.5.0-9.fc16.x86_64
1 | Install | cups-1:1.5.0-1.fc16.x86_64

[root@Hogar ~]#
OK, so the first one installed pre-dates the fix. See bug #731421 comment #11: ==> Upgrading the package will not enable it (this is intentional). Remove it and then reinstall it. <== *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 731421 *** so at home i made preupgrade and now i have the same issue as in the office printing system is unavailable... rpm -q cups cups-1.5.0-16.fc16.x86_64 [oirad@oirad ~]$ systemctl status cups.service cups.service - CUPS Printing Service Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; disabled) Active: inactive (dead) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/cups.service Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

I've added a trigger to the update so that the cups service is re-enabled when the update is applied. See bug #748841 comment #8. |
Description of problem: When trying to configure printers under Fedora 16 RC2 Beta 64 bit, the dialogue box reports printing service is not available. Originally, the "start service" button appeared Gray; later attempts shown the button in Black but nothing happens when clicked, not allowing printers configuration. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): latest available. How reproducible: Every time I try to configure a printer. Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start printing dialogue box. 2.Press "start service" button. 3. Actual results: Nothing happens; the printing service does not start. Expected results: Printing service available by default without even need for a manual start. Additional info: I ran s-c-p from the command prompt, both as user and root and got the following: [Francisco@Hogar ~]$ system-config-printer Traceback: File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/troubleshoot/__init__.py", line 314, in _collect_answer answer = question.collect_answer () File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/troubleshoot/Welcome.py", line 64, in collect_answer '_authenticated_connection': self.op.run () } File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/timedops.py", line 208, in run return self.thread.collect_result () File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/timedops.py", line 161, in collect_result raise self.exception RuntimeError: failed to connect to server [Francisco@Hogar ~]$ su - Password: su: incorrect password [Francisco@Hogar ~]$ su - Password: [root@Hogar ~]# system-config-printer /usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py:1972: GtkWarning: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.MYCU2V': No such file or directory gtk.main() /usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py:1972: GtkWarning: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory gtk.main() [root@Hogar ~]# system-config-printer /usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py:1972: GtkWarning: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.D39V2V': No such file or directory gtk.main() /usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py:1972: GtkWarning: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory gtk.main() [root@Hogar ~]#
