Description Boricua 2011-09-27 12:02:34 UTC
Description of problem: When trying to configure printers under Fedora 16 RC2 Beta 64 bit, the dialogue box reports printing service is not available. Originally, the "start service" button appeared Gray; later attempts shown the button in Black but nothing happens when clicked, not allowing printers configuration.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): latest available.

How reproducible: Every time I try to configure a printer.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start printing dialogue box.
2.Press "start service" button.
3.

Actual results: Nothing happens; the printing service does not start.

Expected results: Printing service available by default without even need for a manual start.

Additional info: I ran s-c-p from the command prompt, both as user and root and got the following:

[Francisco@Hogar ~]$ system-config-printer
Traceback:

What do these commands say?:

rpm -q cups
systemctl status cups.service

See also bug #731421.

Comment 2 Boricua 2011-09-27 13:33:18 UTC
Hi Tim, here's what I got from those commands:

[root@Hogar ~]# rpm -q cups
cups-1.5.0-9.fc16.x86_64
[root@Hogar ~]# systemctl status cups.service
cups.service - CUPS Printing Service
	  Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; disabled)
	  Active: inactive (dead)
	  CGroup: name=systemd:/system/cups.service
[root@Hogar ~]#

Bug #731421 certainly looks similar, but I'm using a later version of cups and the issue seems to persist. Just let me know if you need further info.

Comment 3 Tim Waugh 2011-09-27 13:47:44 UTC
See bug #731421 comment #11 in particular.

Have you ever had a version of cups installed on that system without bug #731421 fixed? e.g. did you install the Alpha and then update, or did you install from a newer beta candidate?

Comment 4 Boricua 2011-09-27 14:15:22 UTC
This is a brand new installation using Beta RC2. However, I saw this same issue when I installed F16 Alpha a while back in this machine. I was later forced to install Beta RC2 from scratch, not an upgrade or update.

What does 'yum history pkg-list cups' say?

Comment 6 Boricua 2011-09-28 00:20:14 UTC
Here is:

[root@Hogar ~]# yum history pkg-list cups
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

Comment 7 Tim Waugh 2011-09-28 08:40:37 UTC
OK, so the first one installed pre-dates the fix. See bug #731421 comment #11:

==>
Upgrading the package will not enable it (this is intentional). Remove it and
then reinstall it.

Comment 11 Tim Waugh 2011-11-09 17:05:38 UTC
I've added a trigger to the update so that the cups service is re-enabled when the update is applied. See bug #748841 comment #8.
