Last night I discover the following: The ethernet card works until the KDE starts up! Just after booting, from the X log in screen if I do a ctrl-alt-F1 and log in from the command line, the ethernet card, CD, and floppy all work. Then, if I go back to X doing ctrl-alt-F7 and log in, once I'm logged in, the ethernet card, CD, and floppy are all dead. The KDE must be probing something that jams up the system. I haven't had time to install and test Gnome (I didn't install it). Gnome produces the problem. I installed WindowMaker and it works fine. The ethernet card and CD do not hang. I'm willing to help debug this, but someone who knows about KDE has to tell me how to disable functionalities to nail down the faulty component. I don't know enough about how KDE works to do it alone. Changed to 'CLOSED' state since 'RESOLVED' has been deprecated. |
