Description Alex Villacís Lasso 2013-12-05 02:08:07 UTC
Description of problem:
This is the same machine as in bug #1038367.

This machine chooses a non-optimal resolution of 800x600, even though, according to xrandr, 1024x768 is available. If I try to use xrandr -s to change the screen resolution to 1024x768, the mode switch fails. Instead, the screen goes all black, and the power led, normally green, turns blinking orange, just like when blanking the screen for powersave. If I try to blindly run xrandr -s to switch back to 800x600, it has no effect - the screen remains black. However, the X server is still active. The Ctrl-Alt-Fn keys work and I can switch to the text consoles. However switching back to the graphics session restores the black screen. The only way to recover is to kill the xorg process, which restarts it at the login screen.

This is not an issue of a monitor that does not support the resolution. If I place configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ to force the initial resolution to 1024x768, the graphics session does start with the specified resolution.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-openchrome-0.3.3-1.fc19.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use a VIA chipset and xorg-x11-drv-openchrome-0.3.3-1.fc19.x86_64
2. Attempt to switch modes with xrandr -s
3.

Actual results:
Screen goes black until Xorg is killed

Expected results:
Screen should switch to the specified resolution, if supported.

Additional info:
This bug is also present in Fedora 18 since xorg-x11-drv-openchrome-0.3.3-1 . The package xorg-x11-drv-openchrome-0.3.1 was not affected by this bug.

Can you please provide the xorg log after a failed mode switch ?
Also, would it be possible you try latest git master ? See http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Openchrome/Installation/ for directions.

Xorg.0.log before xrandr -s 640x480

At this point the screen is at 800x600, desktop visible.

Xorg.0.log after xrandr -s 640x480

At this point the CRT blacked out and the green LED now blinks orange.

Comment 4 Alex Villacís Lasso 2013-12-13 02:32:40 UTC
The two previous attachments were done with the distro driver. I am now checking out the trunk version for git in order to compile.

Xorg.0.log for recompiled driver, crash on xrandr -s 1024x768

Bad news. The HEAD of the driver repository crashes instead of blanking the screen. This is the log of this driver version.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-01-09 20:47:01 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will
be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 7 Alex Villacís Lasso 2015-01-09 22:15:52 UTC
Still present in Fedora 21 x86_64 live CD.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2015-12-02 03:04:10 UTC
Fedora 21 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-12-01. Fedora 21 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
