Created attachment 1045565 [details] Trying to execute Linphone as a program Perhaps this info might be useful. I downloaded and extracted Linphone. Then I tried to execute install-sh by creating a linphone directory and later configuring in order to install the new Linphone for testing purposes. C++ was not able to create an executable file. Not sure how related this is to the building problems with this program.
Note that this package has been successfully built for Ubuntu. It is very important to have this package since it is the only free and open source software that can make video calls from open source operating systems like Fedora to Android or Iphones. Linphone 3.6 the current package has a few bugs and very poor call quality in comparison to the updated package.

So is there any chance of being able to build Linphone for Fedora?
linphone 3.9 requires two new packages to be imported in Fedora belle-sip and mediastreamer, see bug 1050744. Also you can try my copr repo https://copr.fedoraproject.org/coprs/nucleo/linphone/
@nucleo I added your repo and installed the latest version of Linphone. It functions well but it has two problems. First there is no proper identifying icon Second ( the biggest problem ) is that it lacks identifying icons for the necessary buttons for calling or rejecting a call etc. See the screenshot. Other than these two there are no bugs. Linphone is a good replacement for Skype which is proprietary and a nice addition to Firefox Hello and Ekiga. And it is the only foss software that can perform video calls from Fedora to Android and Ios mobile devices.
Created attachment 1095638 [details] Linphone 3.9.1. Call and other buttons can't be identified. Linphone 3.9.1 works very well, but there are two problems, it lacks an identifying icon, and buttons also do not show properly as seen in the attachment.
I added again the linphone repository by nucleo. And I am happy to inform that now everything works very well. Thank you. I think this package might be ripe to be included in the default Fedora repositories.
Hello Nucleo, I installed Linphone from your repository again in Fedora 23 with the 4.4.6 kernel. Unfortunately now the buttons and icons for the audio assistant and linphone are missing again. I have attached some screenshots. Let me know if you need me to test something.
Funny thing, the buttons and the icons appeared after installing Skype. I don't know what dependency was missing.
(In reply to Ervin from comment #30) > Funny thing, the buttons and the icons appeared after installing Skype. I > don't know what dependency was missing. /var/log/dnf.rpm.log*
Nope, nothing there.
@nucleo, Hello there, will you package Linphone 10? Linphone(In reply to Jan Kratochvil from comment #31) > (In reply to Ervin from comment #30) > > Funny thing, the buttons and the icons appeared after installing Skype. I > > don't know what dependency was missing. > > /var/log/dnf.rpm.log* Ignore this, it was fixed.
Latest released linphone sources is 3.9.1 http://www.linphone.org/releases/sources/linphone/ If packaging of new belle-sip will be not so hard as now and review in bug 1050744 will be completed (also review for new mediastreamer package needed) then will be possible to package new linphone release.
@nucleo, will Linphone 3.9.1 or whatever is the latest version be included in Fedora 24? I made a mistake I read 3.1.0 for OSX and I thought there was an update.
Hello nucleo, Linphone 3.10.2 has been released, source code available.

Patching or scratch build for linphone-3.6.1 failed.
Created attachment 1209885 [details] Rebase-helper rebase-helper-debug.log log file. See for details and report the eventual error to rebase-helper https://github.com/phracek/rebase-helper/issues.
Patches were not touched. All were applied properly
Hi, can we expect an update? Current version 3.6.1 is unusable (at least from my pov) because of the greyed-out-apply-button problem in the SIP account wizzard (see https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/linphone-users/2015-01/msg00005.html).
Latest Linphone and belle-sip releases requires packaging at least two new dependencies bctoolbox and mediastreamer.
I tried the newest Linphone from rwa If I remember his name correctly in copr. Buttons are missing but when you install Skype (the old version 4.3.7) Which is available only for 32 bit, icons, linphone icon and buttons get fixed right away. I think it is some 32 bit libraries that come as dependencies for that version of Skype which fix the problem for Linphone 3.10.2 too.
Version 3.11.1 was released, update. https://www.linphone.org/news/51/26/New-release-of-Linphone-Desktop.html https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/rwa9i/linphone/
*** Bug 1616289 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Pity we can't make progress on this due to bug 1050744.
New linphone requires new missing dependencies such as mediastreamer and others.
So we are just falling further and further behind. :-(
Needed someone how can package new dependencies.

As a side note, in case someone else is interested, I'm using the official flatpak and it works like a charm: flatpak --user install --from https://linphone.org/flatpak/linphone.flatpakref
Flatpak is "bundling". For me, the jury is still out on bundling. So until it comes in, I don't trust bundling. I have a hard time believing that all bundlers of their respective given piece of software will keep an eye on the update streams coming from all of the other parts they have bundled to make their app work to ensure that their bundle is not supplying me with an out-of-date piece of software that has security vulnerabilities in it. That and the waste. Having 14 different libfoos because 14 different bundlers (i.e. different pieces of software each in their own flatpak) all want to use different (and potentially quite old) versions of libfoo just to avoid updating their app to the latest (presumably most secure) libfoo. But, the more interesting aspect of there being a flatpak for it, is why can a single package be made that will run on umpteen different distros when it cannot be packaged natively for a single distro like Fedora? That's mostly a rhetorical question. Because yes, I do understand the nature of flatpak providing coherent run-times across different platforms/distros. But still, if it can be built for the flatpak runtime/ABI easily enough, why is a native package posing so much difficulty? Is the native GNOME environment on Fedora that much different than the Flatpak GNOME runtime?

Is there information from the maintainer about the plan for linphone in Fedora? linphone in Fedora is stuck at a version from 2014, which somehow makes moot the argument that bundled libraries in flatpaks go stale if the program itself "rots". (I'm no fan of flatpaks and such, I don't use them.) In fact, is there any current SIP client truely "in" Fedora these days?
Updating to new linphone versions needs much work. If you want you can try to maintain it and related packages. twinkle is one of alternatives to linphone available in Fedora repository.
Thanks for the heads up! This is not meant to critize the maintainer - I know the work involved, especially when upstream decides to take the bundling route or switches to new libraries or toolkits. This bug here seems to indicate that there were packaging efforts on the 3.x line and required libs made it into Fedora at some point. I'm not sure about the 4.x branch. But I'm wondering what to recommend to new SIP users on Fedora - having a package in Fedora is a certain statement, and seeing the version of the linphone package I'm wondering if it's a good recommendation. twinkle is a mostly current Qt5 port of the codebase abandoned by the original upstream. (I'm making no claims about the current upstream.)

An HTTP error occurred downloading the package's new Source URLs: Getting http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/linphone/3.7.x/sources/linphone-5.1.0.tar.gz to ./linphone-5.1.0.tar.gz

(In reply to Upstream Release Monitoring from comment #78) > Based on the information from anitya: > https://release-monitoring.org/project/1823/ I think based on https://new.linphone.org/technical-corner/linphone?qt-technical_corner=2#qt-technical_corner release monitor shouldn't monitor tags from liblinphone ( https://gitlab.linphone.org/BC/public/liblinphone/-/tags ) but from linphone-desktop (https://gitlab.linphone.org/BC/public/linphone-desktop/-/tags ) and the last release is 4.3.2

I'm still wondering what keeps this bug from going stale ... In any case, I have changed the wrong URL used for release monitoring (desktop vs sdk) and requested an admin there to remove the wrong versions. The spec here still does not work, of course. FYI: No more flatpaks by upstream, they are distributing appimages now. (And yes, they work in current Fedora Linuxes.)
(In reply to Michael J Gruber from comment #101) > FYI: No more flatpaks by upstream, they are distributing appimages now. (And > yes, they work in current Fedora Linuxes.) please can you point me how to not have to search , how you installed appimage of linphone
(In reply to Sergio Basto from comment #102) > (In reply to Michael J Gruber from comment #101) > > > FYI: No more flatpaks by upstream, they are distributing appimages now. (And > > yes, they work in current Fedora Linuxes.) > > please can you point me how to not have to search , how you installed > appimage of linphone Excuse my brevity ;) I don't think Appimage is a great format to use. It bundles everything and the kitchensink, even worse than flatpak/snap which at least share runtimes and such. It is what https://linphone.org/ offers you for download when you click the GNU/Linux button (although there may be newer ones at https://download.linphone.org/releases/linux/app/). Appimages are a huge binary blob, so to run one you have to make it executable (chmod +x on the command line or change attributes using your file manager) and then use the command or double click. They don't integrate into the applications menu or such. You'll have to redo this for every update. And linphone will disappear if your downloads folder is cleaned regularly and you don't move it away. You can also look around on copr, but successful linphone builds there bundle quite some stuff, too, and don't look at what the bundle ...
Hi there, Right now, we have 3.6.1 in the Redora repo. Should we continue to provide this rather old version in the repo? I know Appimages are not great, but it's also not great to point users to old versions.
