Description Chris Roberts 2014-09-12 16:47:53 UTC
The Font face in the documentation is not very readable. The spacing between the characters varies a lot:

Since this issue was entered in Red Hat Bugzilla, the release flag has been
set to ? to ensure that it is properly evaluated for this release.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the feedback. We'll look into this and update this request once we have a solution.

Cheers,
Athene

Hi Chris,

So far, looking at the bug I can see 2 specific changes in font:
1. Table of Contents - different font from the main doc
2. Main Doc

(There is also of course the changes in font when the text is highlighted as a command or an example of what the command output is.)

Can you give me more specific instances wherein it isn't readable?

Thanks,
Athene

Hi Athene,

I have attached private jpegs of what the customer is seeing with the fonts.

Both of these cases appear in "common content" - apart from a couple of variables, the text is the same in every book. It'd be interesting to know if the same issue occurs in different books.
Also, which pdf viewer are they using?

thanks

Chris or Mark,

Could you guys investigate this? If it's showing up in Common Content it's not going to be specific to one book.

Thanks

Hi David,

The Customer Portal doesn't create PDFs on the fly, so it wouldn't be coming from our end of the team. These resources are pre-compiled before they get to us. My assumption is that these PDFs are being generated by Publican (which publishes all the different forms of the docs as static resources). I would check with the Docs team on this or, perhaps, Andy Fitzsimon might have an idea.

Sorry I can't be much help on this.

David - the question I have is whether or not this problem is unique to the SAT6 documentation. I also checked a couple others and they look the same to my eye (not great but not unreadable).

So yes this needs to be fixed but I'm curious if there are any books out there which are completely correct in PDF form....do you know of any?

Hi Chris,
This wouldn't be unique to the Sat6 doc because the issue the customer has reported stems from "Common Content", which is part of the brand used to build these and some other (not all) docs. Whichever doc uses the same brand (RedHat) would likely suffer the same issue.

I understand there is a later brand (RedHat<date>) but afaik it would still include the Legal Notice, and that's where the issue was found (one of them, anyway). I had a look at the RHEL 7 Install Guide pdf and that has similar issues, so I'm guessing it's related to how the PDF files are built.

There's not really anything that I can do at this end, so I need to reassign this as a general "PDF readability issue" bug to someone who can investigate further.

Lee can you have a look at this when you return?

Comment 18 David O'Brien 2015-01-12 04:37:06 UTC
Chris,
Can you or someone in tooling team take on this bug? It's not something specific to Satellite. I'm changing the product over to publican.

thanks

Customer came back with feedback that issue seems to be fixed for him.
It was actually already on 18th of April.

Comment 23 Jeff Fearn 🐞 2017-01-09 10:54:44 UTC
Hi Lee, is there any fix to publican required for this?

Comment 24 Lee Newson 2017-01-09 21:33:49 UTC
No it's related to wkhtmltopdf and not Publican directly.
