Description fedora_45sg 2015-10-02 15:19:49 UTC
Description of problem:
While booting into Desktop a crackling sound appears (like connect speakers or headphones to a music player if not muted) and it sounds very unhealthy to the speakers.

I quote what I posted on launchpad because it also describes the same:

''When using Debian Testing I have the issue while booting. With Fedora 23 Beta its also the same while booting. Always this unhealthy sounding crackling noise and then working normal after booting is finished. Muting is working, volume selecting is working without any issues, just while booting to Desktop there seems to be something not working properly while initializing internal speakers.

On latest Ubuntu 14.04.3 there is no crackling while booting. Just booting normally into Desktop. You can hear that the speakers are initialized with a very silent plopping sound (as also in Debian Stable) but I think I start observing it just because of this crackling sound before. I was running Ubuntu 14.04.2 plus LTS Enabled Stack before and there were also no such issues.

Same problem since f22 (IIRC), it worked correctly previously, ThinkPad x240, attaching alsa-info.

Workaround proposed in https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=943982#c8:

The proposed workaround doesn't work for me. For me it cracks upon login to Xfce. It cracks once. It may be also pulseaudio, investigating.

Comment 6 Sascha Zantis 2015-11-04 18:36:08 UTC
I have the same problem on a Thinkpad L450. Cracks after boot and after login and when I start some applications like telegram.

The workaround doesn't work, because there is no /lib/firmware/alsa in my system.

The problem existed in F22 and still does in F23.

I had an L420 before (running F22 and F23beta) without those problems.

You can create this directory, it's optional, but it didn't help for me, so my issue is probably different problem than the mentioned aggressive power savings of some HD codecs.

IIRC mine problem started cca. a month or two after f22 release and is still there. So I am encountering probably different issue, I am going to investigate.

The latest updates from a few minutes ago apparently fixed it for me.

I confirm that there is no crackling sound on boot / resume from suspend.

Problem solved. Thanks

Comment 11 Jaroslav Škarvada 2015-11-09 10:23:47 UTC
I can confirm that the problem disappear for me with the latest 4.2.5 kernel update, even on f22:
kernel-4.2.5-201.fc22

Thanks.

Comment 12 Josh Boyer 2015-11-09 14:12:47 UTC
Thank you.

Comment 13 Jan Synacek 2016-01-25 12:13:40 UTC
The problem is back in kernel-4.3.3-301.fc23.x86_64. Can anyone confirm?

Comment 14 Sascha Zantis 2016-01-25 14:43:17 UTC
Yes, can confirm. Not exactly the same problem for me (No crackling sounds at boot), but similar behaviour, for example a few seconds after stopping mplayer/vlc etc.

*********** MASS BUG UPDATE **************

We apologize for the inconvenience. There is a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 23 kernel bugs.

Fedora 23 has now been rebased to 4.7.4-100.fc23. Please test this kernel update (or newer) and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel.

If you have moved on to Fedora 24 or 25, and are still experiencing this issue, please change the version to Fedora 24 or 25.

If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.
