RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Carlos Mestre González 2015-12-05 00:36:32 UTC
Description of problem:
This is an scenario we've seen in ovirt (see BZ1273891), after 3 disks are attached to a live vm with RHEL as guest the process panics and shutdowns (only happens in ppc64le)

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have a vm OS with RHEL and start it
2. Create 3 additional disks and add them to the vm [sparse/type doesn't seem to matter for my tests]

Actual results:
Guest 'panics' and shutdown.

Expected results:

Additional info:
Just to clarify, if the disks are added when the vm is down there's no issue afterwards starting the vm

Logs are in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1097259 and the rest of the information, specially Francesco Romani's comments in the bz.

Comment 1 Karen Noel 2015-12-05 12:13:22 UTC
Please test with RHEL 7.2.z batch update 1, plus the latest qemu-kvm-rhev for 7.2.z. Then report if this problem is fixed. Thanks.

Hi Carlos Mestre González

I would like to know your kernel version of guest so that i can reproduce the issue .

thanks a lot.

Comment 4 Xujun Ma 2015-12-08 10:44:43 UTC
there are some problems with kernel-3.10.0-327 of guest or before it when hot plug pci device.
I have tried to hot plug three virtio block disks in guest with kernel-3.10.0-327,and it made kernel panic.
the bug has been fixed in kernel-3.10.0-328, and I try it again with the kernel-3.10.0-328,it won't make kernel panic.

so I don't know if the version of your guest kernel causes the issue.

Can you reproduce with latest 7.2.z - which seem to be 3.10.10-327.3.1 ?

Comment 6 Michal Skrivanek 2015-12-10 18:03:36 UTC
If so then this is a duplicate of bug 1279793

I try it with kernel-3.10.10-327.3.1 and kernel-3.10.10-327.4.1,and the guest won't be kernel panic when hot plug virtio-blk device.

Xujun, thank you for confirmation
with the lack of response from RHEV QE I consider this sufficient proof and I'm closing this as a duplicate
