oVirt gerrit 63144 0 ovirt-engine-4.0 ABANDONED core, webadmin: Nested virt. removed from kernel cmdline 2016-09-12 14:45:18 UTC

Description Yaniv Kaul 2016-09-01 06:45:26 UTC
Description of problem:
Nested virtualization is not supported by platform, why is it there in the first place?

Downstream only, please remove it.
(Putting the component on ovirt-engine - if it has REST API or what not, need to remove it as well).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
4.0.3.

Patch http://gerrit.ovirt.org/63139 completely removes the checkbox UI (even from upstream). The feature still can be used by typing the option manually into text box.

Comment 2 Yaniv Kaul 2016-09-06 13:49:53 UTC
No need to remove it - we can just mark it (clearly!) as tech preview.

AFAIK it's not a tech preview in 7.3 anymore

Comment 4 Michal Skrivanek 2016-09-09 09:42:32 UTC
or at least it's slowly getting there. It is however not fully supported indeed. Marking it as such makes sense

Comment 5 jniederm 2016-09-12 14:41:36 UTC
The Host dialog already contains red warning pointing to the documentation. However there is no doc for Host dialog > Kernel side-tab yet. Changing to documentation bug.

Please document Host dialog > Kernel side-tab. Clearly mark first checkbox option (Hostdev Passthrough & SR-IOV) as supported only with supported hardware and the remaining three optiotns (Nested Virtualization, Unsafe Interrupts, PCI Reallocation) as unsupported. Please also update 4.0 versions of https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.6/html/Installation_Guide/appe-Configuring_a_Hypervisor_Host_for_PCI_Passthrough.html and https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.6/html/Hardware_Considerations_for_Implementing_SR-IOV/Intro.html#summary_of_hardware_considerations_for_sr_iov accordingly as discussed in bug 1322343.

Comment 7 Julie 2016-09-22 06:25:09 UTC
hi Jakub,
I understand why Nested Virtualization is not supported in production environments, but why are Unsafe Interrupts, PCI Reallocation also not supported? We mentioned the unsafe interrupt in the current published guide already[1]

On another note, if these options are not supported, I still think it should be added to the question mark note next to the options. It's not good user experience to ask users to read the docs just to find out that the options are not supported.

Cheers,
Julie

Hi Julie,

maybe it just need to be rephrased: Options Unsafe Interrupts and PCI Reallocation are not supported to be used in production environments similarly to Nested Virtualization. They are meant as a workaround for not certified hardware. That's why we believe explicit note in info question marks is not necessary.

Jakub
