We have accumulated quite a few patches, and to keep ABI versioning sane, it's much better to rebase to latest upstream release rather than cherry-picking patches adding new ABI to older versions.
As I understand, this does not break the current ABI, but does add new ABI only. Please correct me, if I am wrong.
