Description of problem: kernel-4.8 freezes xorg for 10 secs when pressing increase brightness key. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): kernel-4.8.6-201.fc24.x86_64 How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. press increase brightness key (dell inspiron 1525 laptop) 2. 3. Actual results: screen, keyboard, mouse freeze for 10 secs Expected results: increase brightness Additional info: kernel-4.8.4 totally froze screen, keyboard, mouse at boot time, including text consoles, making the laptop unusable. Network was still active. Kernel 4.7 and earlier do not have this problem, although they do get a similar kernel-oops as reported in bz#134755. Refer to that bug for the kernel oops from this more serious manifestation. It is tainted, but only by the kernel oops at boot time, which is also logged there.
Errata, that is bz#1342755
I been reporting this problem for many generations of Fedora, but an earlier report for f24 is bz#1352023. I won't mark this a dup since the new symptoms are much more serious.
The KVM (kbd, vid, mouse) also freezes when the display dims to save power.
This seems to happen on older Intel graphics. A desktop with newer Intel graphics does not have this problem. Here is the hardware kernel-4.8 fails on: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c) if this can't be fixed, maybe Fedora should just officially no longer support older Intel graphics.
Still broken on kernel-4.8.15-200.fc24.x86_64, last usable kernel tested was 4.7.9.
