Description Pat Riehecky 2017-02-14 23:34:34 UTC
Description of problem:
It would be nice if there was a way to say "Snapshot this VM every X, and delete snapshots older than Y" from the Admin interface.

For high sensitivity VMs the ability to have automatic snapshots would help simplify difference analysis and provide a clean way to look at system history.

Yes the filesystems wouldn't be cleanly unmounted, but this isn't (to my mind) much worse than when a HA VM crashes and is restarted on another node.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): oVirt 4.1

How reproducible:100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Look for clean way to schedule snapshots and retention policies
2.
3.

1. It could easily be automated using the REST API / Python SDK / Ruby SDK / Java SDK / Ansible, but I agree a UI is nicer.
2. The file system should be sync'ed if qemu-guest-agent is installed, as it calls 'fsfreeze'.
3. Notice that https://github.com/ovirt-china/vm-backup-scheduler has no license associated with it.

Comment 2 Yaniv Kaul 2017-03-12 19:32:34 UTC
Also, note that if the VMs are using a direct LUN, it's best to schedule it from the storage.

You can also use manageiq to perform such tasks as well.

Comment 4 Doron Fediuck 2018-05-27 13:55:57 UTC
Most likely will be handled by Ansible.
